Tribe starter Strain silences Mason’s bats
Wade Strain pitched seven shutout innings and Tyler Solomon drove in two runs as William & Mary (1-3) won 4-1 Saturday at George Mason (1-3). Matt Thomas belted his first Tribe home run, and Jack Cone had three hits and scored twice.
Jonathan Fisher’s two-run homer in the first inning set the tone as host Christopher Newport (2-1) won 8-2 over Virginia Wesleyan (0-5). Conner Clark added two hits and two RBIs for CNU, and Michael Martorano and Ethan Weaver each batted 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI.
Jared Dupere slugged a two-run, go-ahead homer as Northeastern rallied for three ninth-inning runs and held on to win 6-5 Saturday at Old Dominion (7-3), evening their series at a victory apiece heading into today’s finale.
The Huskies (3-3) are coached by Mike Glavine, who played for the Norfolk Tides in 2003 and ’04 and whose brother, Tom, is a Hall of Fame pitcher. They cut their deficit to 5-4 on a fielder’s-choice grounder before Dupere homered on a full-count pitch.
The Monarchs scored all of their runs in the third. Andy Garriola slugged a grand slam and Robbie Petracci followed with a solo shot to put ODU ahead 5-2.
North Carolina Central scored six runs in the top of the second inning and held on for a 10-8 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Norfolk State. The Eagles then completed the sweep by winning 10-0.
In Game 1, NSU’s Korey Singh belted a three-run homer and had four RBIs, and teammate Alsander Womack scored three runs, walked twice and had a hit.
