Western Branch 12, No. 15 Grassfield 7

Western Branch’s defense rose to every challenge in the second half as the Bruins held on to upset No. 15 Grassfield Friday in a Southeastern District game in Chesapeake.

The host Grizzlies (1-2), who trailed 12-7 at the half, had only three possessions during the final two quarters. All three got inside the Western Branch 35-yard line, but the Bruins’ defense forced Grassfield to turn the ball over on downs each time.

Grassfield’s best opportunity came midway through the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies moved the ball to the 20-yard line. But over the next three plays, the Bruins (2-2) pushed the Grizzlies back, forcing a fourth-and-25 at the 35-yard line. With time for a comeback running out, Grassfield went for it and the Bruins registered a sack.

Western Branch took the lead early on a first-quarter field goal.

The Bruins struck again early in the second quarter. After intercepting a Grassfield pass, Western Branch started driving. After two fumbles put the Bruins in a third-and-27 situation at the Grizzlies’ 48, quarterback JaShaun Fraizer hit CJ Fraser for a 13-yard gain. Fraizer followed it with a 34-yard pass to Paul Billups, putting Western Branch at the 1-yard line. Fraizer scored on the next play, giving the Bruins a 9-0 lead.

Grassfield responded quickly, moving 55 yards on six plays. Jai Foskey capped the drive with a 4-yard run. The extra point made the score 9-7.

The Bruins added another field goal before halftime and used their ground game to control the clock in the second half.
