New Kent tops Tabb for playoff spot

Bay Rivers District New Kent 14, Tabb 11

In a de facto play-in game for the Class 3 Region A playoffs, the host Trojans (4-2) beat the Tigers (3-2). It was the final game for coach Matt Lawson, who came to Tabb in 2004.

Unofficial­ly, New Kent earned the fourth and final spot, giving the Trojans a region semifinal on the road against top-seeded Lafayette.

A first-quarter touchdown gave New Kent a 7-0 lead, and Tabb countered with a field goal in the second quarter.

Another New Kent touchdown boosted the lead to 14-3. Tabb scored a TD and two-point conversion with 2:05 remaining in the game, but New Kent ran out the clock.

Eastern District Booker T. Washington 36, Norcom 8

The Bookers (2-3) breezed past the Greyhounds (1-4) in an Eastern District game at Powhatan Field. It was just Booker T.’s second win in the rivalry’s past 11 meetings.

Southeaste­rn District Grassfield 31, Great Bridge 13

Two first-quarter touchdowns boosted the visiting Grizzlies past the Wildcats in a Chesapeake rivalry.

Grassfield led 21-0 before Great Bridge scored a touchdown in the third quarter.

FRIDAY

Norview 32, Granby 0

Norview used a 20-point third quarter to win an Eastern District season finale at Powhatan Field.

The Pilots led 6-0 at halftime before opening the second half with a quick scoring strike. MarQeese Dietz threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Jaydin Williams to give Norview a 12-0 lead.

After forcing the Comets (0-4) to turn the ball over on downs, Norview struck again as Donovan Smith caught a 30-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion gave the Pilots a 20-0 lead.

Dietz had another TD pass and Ahmad Ashby scored from inside the 10-yard line for the Pilots (4-2).

The game wasn’t originally planned. Both teams had games canceled because of their original opponents’ COVID-19 issues.

Bethel 29, Gloucester 18

Bethel (1-2) scored the first 17 points of the second half to break away from Gloucester (1-1) in a game that was tied at 12 at halftime. The loss likely ended the host Dukes’ Class 5 playoff hopes.

The Bruins got a big night passing from quarterbac­k Caleb Beard. Devon Gaffney, Joel Hicks, Isaiah Smith and Conner Pate each scored a touchdown for Bethel, while Elijah Dykes kicked a 35-yard field goal.

The Bruins will host Denbigh at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Darling Stadium.

Hampton 46, Heritage 0

The Crabbers (3-2) ran out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead in their Peninsula District win over the Hurricanes (0-5) as both Adam Hatcher and Elijah Robertson found the end zone at Todd Stadium.

Hampton led 32-0 at halftime.
