NSU, W&M, CNU sweep doublehead­ers

Norfolk State (14-20, 10-5 MEAC) swept a home doublehead­er Saturday from Coppin State (5-20, 3-11), winning 6-2 and 3-2.

In Game 1, James Deloatch (4-2) pitched a complete game, striking out 11 in seven innings and yielding six hits and two walks. Danny Hosley scored twice and Alsander Womack and Jacob Council had two hits each.

In Game 2, Dalton Barham threw a complete-game four-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Spartans, who overcame a 2-0 deficit. Mason Velasquez tied the score with a two-run double in the fourth, and Womack scored the eventual winning run in the sixth when Hosley reached on an error by the Eagles’ shortstop.

William & Mary ( 8-18, 5-6 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n) achieved a doublehead­er sweep of Elon (11-15, 4-4), winning 6-4 and then 12-9 at Plumeri Park.

In Game 1, W&M erased Elon’s 4-2 lead with a three-run seventh inning. Hogarth hit an RBI double down the left-field line, and Ben Williamson belted a two-run homer to put the Tribe ahead 5-4. Jack Cone hit a solo home run in the eighth and finished the game as the pitcher. Nic Britt, from Greenbrier Christian, had an RBI single for W&M.

In Game 2, Britt hit a two-run double in a six-run first inning. W&M was ahead 9-1 after two innings and then withstood a Phoenix comeback.

Christophe­r Newport ( 14-7, 7-3 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference) hammered Mary Washington in a doublehead­er in Newport News, 8-2 and then 20-3.

In Game 1, CNU won behind Jay Cassady’s four RBIs and the pitching of Josh Husby (5-0), who held UMW to six hits in eight innings. Cassady, Jonathan Fisher and Alec Reilly hit home runs. Like Cassady, Scott Crosson was 2 for 4 and scored twice.

In Game 2, the Captains went ahead 15-1 with a 10-run fifth. Twelve Captains drove in at least a run in that game; Daniel Elliott scored three.

No. 22 Old Dominion continued its power display, hammering Rice 11-2 with four home runs among 14 hits in Game 1 of a doublehead­er in Norfolk. Nick Pantos struck out four to gain his fourth win of the season.

Game 2 was underway at press time, with ODU 26-6, 11-2 in Conference USA entering it.

Roanoke, with a couple of players enjoying good homecoming­s, swept Virginia Wesleyan 9-4 and then 8-5 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doublehead­er in Virginia Beach.

In Game 1, Carter Plunkett was 3 for 5 with five RBIs and two runs for the Maroons (21-7, 13-3), and Atlantic Shores graduate Tanner James pitched five innings for the victory. Aiden Kuhle, from Cape Henry Collegiate, held VWU (5-18, 5-11) hitless for 3 ⅔ innings to gain his second save of the year. Tyriq Campbell was the only Marlin with two hits.

In Game 2, a seven-run sixth put the Maroons ahead 8-0. VWU’s Matt Dagostino drove in three runs and Jaelen Hines scored two, and both had two hits.
