R.S. "MIKE" PILAND, JR.
Robert Stanley “Mike” Piland, Jr., 90, passed away on June 14, 2022. Mike was born in Newport News to R. Stanley Piland and Grace Lockhart Piland. He was nicknamed “Mike” while in utero by his maternal grandfather. A graduate of Warwick High School, Mike attended the
University of Richmond, served in the United States Air Force as a radio operator on a B-29, and in 1960, graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia. He practiced architecture with Forrest Coile & Associates, P. C., and after retiring, contracted with Riverside Health System as an architect. He loved the field of architecture and enjoyed sharing the stories behind the many buildings he designed.
Mike was a “people person,” with a witty sense of humor. He was a faithful and caring friend, and the twinkle in his eye and his infectious smile endeared him to all who knew him. He loved to recount stories of his adventures while attending college as a veteran, living and working in Indonesia, and cruising to foreign countries. He reveled in playing golf and gin rummy with his buddies at James River Country Club, where he was a permanent fixture at the card table in the basement on Wednesday nights.
Mike was a kind and loving husband, father,
grandfather, and uncle. He cherished his family and never missed an opportunity to let them know how much he loved them. One of the highlights of Mike's life was walking his granddaughter Shelton down the aisle on her wedding day.
Mike and Susan have resided happily at the Warwick Forest Retirement Community for the past 13 years where they formed valued friendships with neighbors and staff members.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 42 years, Susan; his children R.S. “Stan” Piland, III (Christine), Laurel S. Piland, and Matthew Leonard (Siobhan); and his grandchildren, Shelton Piland Poulter (Devan) and Luke Leonard; his sister, Grace Anne Piland; his niece, E. Page Piland, and his nephew, Kenneth L. “Kent”
Piland, Jr. (Laura). He was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Lockhart Piland; his parents; and his in-laws, Arthur and Alverta Nelson. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 by Pastor Tina Melusky at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6807 Huntington Ave., Newport News. A reception in the church fellowship hall will follow the service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Tee – Virginia Peninsula, 1003 Brick Kiln Blvd., Newport News, VA. 23602 [Attention Noelle Larson].
