Duffy sisters lift First Colonial to region swim championship
Patriots’ boys team also wins to make it a sweep
Sisters Kayleigh and Dara Duffy each cruised to a pair of individual victories and were part of two winning relays as First Colonial turned in a dominating performance to win the Class 5 Region A girls swimming championship Friday at Princess Anne Recreation Center in Virginia Beach.
Kayleigh Duffy, a University of Virginia commit, won the 50and 100-meter freestyle events. Dara Duffy, a freshman, won the 200 and 400 freestyle races. The Duffys were both part of the winning 200 freestyle relay, and each was a member of another victorious relay team as well.
Kayleigh Duffy’s 50-meter (26.6 seconds) and 100-meter (57.89) times both were region records.
First Colonial finished with 628 points, followed by Hickory (404) and Cox (290).
In the boys competition, Hickory stars Jay Gerloff and Ben Mauldin turned in top individual performances with four total victories, but First Colonial’s depth gave the Patriots the team title.
Gerloff won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, while Maudlin won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. They also were winners on the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Cox’s Carter Baum had individual wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle events and was part of the first-place 200 free relay.
Nate Keenan paced First Colonial with a second-place finish in the 200 free and was part of two second-place relays, and teammate Chase Wilkerson was second in the 100 backstroke.
Hickory’s Jacob Shinn (1-meter diving) and Zachary McNabb (400 free) and Salem’s Tyler Koepp (100 backstroke) also had first-place finishes. McNabb was also part of two winning relays.
First Colonial finished with 406 points, followed by Hickory (374) and Cox (335).
TCIS swimming
Norfolk Academy sweeps:
Norfolk Academy took both Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools team titles in the TCIS championships at Brittingham-Midtown Community Center in Newport News. Cape Henry Collegiate was the runner-up for boys and girls.
Cape Henry’s George Sullivan and Catholic’s Jena Lawlor were named the meet MVPs for boys and girls, respectively. Cape Henry’s Bryan Rudolph was the boys Coach of the Year and Norfolk Academy’s Kristen Kirkman was the girls Coach of the Year.
The Bulldogs led the boys standings with 525 points, followed by Cape Henry with 262 and Walsingham Academy with 236.
Norfolk Academy’s girls accumulated 500 points, while Cape Henry had 276 and third-place Peninsula Catholic 229.
TCIS wrestling
Cape Henry earns tourney title:
Cape Henry Collegiate captured the TCIS tournament championship in its gym.
The Dolphins finished with 204.5 points, followed by Norfolk Academy (188), Peninsula Catholic (182), Catholic (124), Norfolk Collegiate (115) and Norfolk Christian (13).
Norfolk Academy’s Tucker Gaddy, the champion at 144 pounds, was named the tournament MVP.
Cape Henry’s Nolan Sharp (138), Josh Old (175), Townsend Winans (190) and John Custis (285) won their brackets.
Gaddy, O’Boyle, Sam Tignor (150) and Logan Pausch (157) took titles for Norfolk Academy. Also emerging as champions were Peninsula Catholic’s Ganon Daly (106), Jacob Stewart (120), Thomas Montgomery (126) and Luke Murray (132) as well as Norfolk Collegiate’s Carson Miller (113).
Class 5 Region A gymnastics
FC wins region: First Colonial won the Class 5 Region A team gymnastics championship, totaling 140.1 points and earning the region’s only berth in the state team meet Feb. 17 at Lightridge High in Loudoun County.
Green Run’s Ainsley Cornstuble won the all-around title with 36.675 points, and FC’s Ella Collins was the runner-up at 36.55.
Cornstuble won the vault competition at 9.425 and the uneven parallel bars at 9.5. Hickory’s Estelle Horne won on the balance beam with a 9.4, and Salem’s Alexis Albright won the floor exercise at 9.5.
Gymnasts in the top four in their events also qualified for the state meet.
