Ticer belts trio of ODU’s 8 HRs in rout of Marshall

Old Dominion reached a new level with its prolific power, belting eight home runs Saturday as the Monarchs pounded Marshall 21-5 to level their Sun Belt series at a victory apiece.

Jake Ticer hit three homers, drove in seven runs and scored five. Two of his home runs came in a nine-run seventh inning by ODU (19-4, 4-1 Sun Belt).

Camden Grimes slugged two homers, and Josh Trujillo, Kenny Levari and Robbie O’Neal each hit one. The blasts by O’Neal and Trujillo brought in three runs apiece.

Sam Armstrong (5-0) yielded three runs in 5 innings for the win. John Holobetz pitched the final 3 innings for a save, drop- ping Marshall to 11-9, 2-3.

On Friday, ODU dropped a second straight game for the first time this season, falling 6-1 to Marshall.

Thundering Herd starter Patrick Copen (1-2) struck out 11 in eight innings, limiting ODU (18-4, 3-1 Sun Belt) to three hits and three walks.

Blake Morgan (2-2) took the loss after yielding four runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks in 4 innings.

Monmouth 14, William & Mary 12:

Monmouth scored 10 runs in the third inning and held on at Plumeri Park, evening a Colonial Athletic Associatio­n series against W&M at one victory apiece.

The Tribe (13-11, 4-4), which trailed 11-5 after 3 innings, nearly caught up. Down by two runs, they loaded the bases with one out, but couldn’t score to overtake the Hawks (9-10, 2-6).

Joe Delossanto­s was 4 for 6 with four RBIs, his second consecutiv­e game with four hits. He, Lucas Carmichael and Ben Williamson combined for eight hits, seven runs and seven RBIs in the top three spots of W&M’s order.

On Friday, Delossanto­s went 4 for 4, slugged a two-run homer and scored twice to help William & Mary win 8-3. Ben Williamson and Max Winters contribute­d two-hit games, and Corey Adams walked twice and scored twice.

Nate Knowles achieved his second win on the season for the Tribe, allowing one run on one hit over three innings. Zach Tsakounis yielded no runs in three innings, striking out four, and Carter Lovasz picked up his second save of the season by giving up one run in the final three innings.

Christophe­r Newport 11-12, St. Joseph’s of Brooklyn 0-2:

The Captains (22-6), ranked 16th in Division III, won a doublehead­er from the Bears (5-7).

Before the games, the Medina14 Foundation presented a check to CNU athletics for more than $62,000 to establish the Ricky Medina, Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarshi­p and the Ricky Medina, Jr. Memorial Annual Scholarshi­p. Medina, a 2005 graduate, died of brain cancer this year. He was an all-conference second baseman on the 2003 team that placed second in the Division III World Series.

In Game 1, Zach Dzarnowski slugged a three-run homer in the first inning and finished with five RBIs. Scott Crosson was 3 for 4 with three runs and

an RBI, and Josh Reinhold and Ayden Stuffel each had two hits and scored twice. Jackson Baird (4-1) limited the Bears to two hits in six innings, and Nate Toomey pitched a 1-2-3 seventh.

In Game 2, Brandon Cassedy (4-1) pitched six shutout innings for the triumph. Daniel Elliott and Will Pellegrino socked home runs.

Bridgewate­r 10-10, Virginia Wesleyan 1-8:

VWU (3-16-1, 2-4-1 ODAC) lost a home doublehead­er against the Eagles (11-13, 4-3).

The Marlins have dropped five games in a row.

In Game 2, VWU’s Tanner Clements and Connor Hall had three hits and two RBIs apiece. The Marlins scored five runs in the ninth but couldn’t catch up.

In that game, Bridgewate­r’s Brandan Hartman had three RBIs, while Luke Tomajczyk and Western Branch High alum Kyle Carlson drove in two runs each.

Postponeme­nt: Norfolk State’s series finale at Central Connecticu­t State was postponed to noon today because of weather in New Britain. The Blue Devils (11-3, 8-0 Northeast Conference) won 8-4, 6-0 in a doublehead­er Friday against the Spartans (3-7, 1-4).
