Arrest made in November Isle of Wight killing
Federal authorities arrested a 23-year-old man wanted in the November slaying of a New York man in Isle of Wight County.
Acting on a tip, the U.S. Marshals found Travis Lewis Wilson at a Newport News apartment Thursday evening.
Wilson is charged with murder in the Nov. 2 killing of Marvin Guillaume-Sam, 30, in the county’s Carrollton section, just across the James River Bridge from Newport News.
Responding to reports of a shooting about 5:30 p.m. that afternoon, Isle of Wight sheriff ’s deputies found Guillaume-Sam in the 12000 block of Smith’s Neck Road. He had been shot multiple times, and died a short time later at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
Guillaume-Sam’s last known address was in Flushing, New York, but investigators are still trying to piece together his connection to Isle of Wight and how he and Wilson knew each other, said Sheriff ’s Office Deputy Alecia Paul.
Though Wilson’s last known address was in Brooklyn, New York, he also spent time in Isle of Wight, having gone to high school in the county, Paul said.
“Wilson’s bounced around a little bit,” she said. “He originally lived here. And then he’s got some contacts in New York … And then we’d heard he had been in North Carolina for a bit and then back here, and finally he got picked up here yesterday.”
A criminal complaint wasn’t immediately available late Friday, but Paul said tips from eyewitnesses and others led sheriff ’s investigators to Wilson.
“There were witnesses on the scene who had given us names,” she said. “And we had tips come in to us that we followed up on.”
Wilson is charged with second-degree murder, malicious shooting, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. He’s being held without bond at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
