America’s demise

- — Sharon M. Haring, Virginia Beach

Having grown up in the “Happy Days” era, I am struggling with the America I have known and the America I am currently observing. My generation’s parents saw the end of World War II, the divisive Korean conflict and the passing of the big band era.

My generation saw the end of “Happy Days” syndrome with the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Vietnam War, the hippie culture and a president resigning rather than being impeached. Now our heads are spinning.

Of the two likely presidential candidates one is under indictment; the other is facing impeachment that will certainly not hurt his chances. It’s all going on simultaneously with immigrants entering the country illegally and flooding the cities, sidewalks and sanctuary cities that truly cannot accommodate them. Some of them are starting to commit violent crimes.

Our government officials on all levels seem to be ineffective or unwilling to make hard decisions as gun violence now has the United States with more gun deaths than many other countries on planet Earth. We are learning to be wary of going into public places and of sending our children to school. We are teetering on the brink of wondering how many more innocent lives will be lost to shootings. Sadly, we are becoming immune to comprehending the tragedies. What world are we leaving for the children and their children? Will we have anything close to resembling the nation following World War II? Will we witness more moral decay and civic chaos? I for one bemoan the loss of what was and fear for what is to come.
