Fund set to honor ex-coach Killmon

- Sonny Dearth

A fund is being established to honor the legacy of Ron Killmon, an area football and baseball coach who died in January at age 83. I thank former Virginian-Pilot/Daily Press colleague Ed Miller for pointing it out.

Killmon grew up in Onancock, on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, and was a dual-sport star. He played football and baseball for William & Mary and baseball for Old Dominion. He also played defensive back and returned kicks for the semipro Norfolk Neptunes’ football team from 1965-69.

Killmon coached at Granby, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, Catholic, Windsor and Broadwater Academy.

The fund is called the Coach Ron Killmon PRLPT Fund, for Pride, Respect, Love, Protect and Togetherness — the principles that guided him as a coach and mentor.

The organizers say the fund began with an anonymous $25,000 donation, and it is administered by The Suffolk Foundation. It will “support nonprofit organizations or projects that serve disadvantaged children and youth and that emphasize values such as character, work ethic and discipline.”

Funds can go to organizations serving Norfolk, Suffolk, Western Tidewater and the Eastern Shore counties of Accomack and Northampton. For questions or assistance, call The Suffolk Foundation at 757-9239090 or go to https://suffolkfoundation.org/donate/

Norfolk State’s first varsity tennis coach, Nat Warren, is getting to see the Spartans’ on-campus tennis center named after him.

“My story starts as the son of a sharecropper and knowing that life is truly what you make it,” wrote Warren, an NSU athlete long before the Spartans began varsity tennis competition in 1993. “I am grateful to have had my parents and people throughout my life that have helped me develop as an individual, encouraged my passions and had confidence in me to carry out the goals and create the impact I had set in life.”

Warren thanked his wife, Liz, and the rest of his immediate and extended family.

“I feel as though I am walking on cloud nine, and I am so excited to share with the next generation that no matter where you start in life, if you put your mind to it, believe in yourself and work hard towards those goals, anything is possible,” he wrote.
