Johnson, Wheeler spark win over Delaware State

Diamond Johnson scored 20 points Saturday as the Norfolk State women defeated Delaware State 65-51 in Dover, ensuring the Spartans of at least a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season title and extending their winning streak to 10 games.

Johnson contributed seven rebounds, six steals and five assists. Teammate Kierra Wheeler, long noted for her double-doubles, got another one with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

NSU (22-5, 11-1) quickly eliminated the Hornets’ upset hopes by outscoring them 27-8 in the first quarter. The Spartans cooled off after that but remained in front by at least nine.

NSU can win the crown outright with a home victory over Maryland Eastern Shore or Howard, though the Spartans would prefer to stay unscathed entering the conference tournament at Scope.

Savannah Brooks led the Hornets (8-17, 4-8) with 18 points, but they shot just 32.7% (18 of 55) as their two-game winning streak ended.

A serious injury to Patriots freshman Kennedy Harris, a Hampton High graduate, marred a Rams victory that ensured VCU (26-4, 15-3) of gaining the second seed at the Atlantic 10 Tournament in Richmond. The game drew a Siegel Center women’s basketball attendance record of 6,054.

With the Patriots (23-6, 14-4) trailing 12-1 and 5:21 left in the first quarter, Harris’ head crashed into the padding of a basket stanchion as she tried to grab a rebound in traffic. She was down for about 15 minutes before EMTs took her off the court on a stretcher.

Sarah Te-Biasu had 24 points, five rebounds and three assists for VCU.
