Hall’s comeback pin powers Kellam to rout of Landstown

Kellam 56, Landstown 16

Guy Hall avoided the worst and made the most of it.

Hall, ranked No. 3 in Hampton Roads at 145 pounds, escaped a near-fall that put him down 5-2 in the first period and returned with a pin in the second period as the No. 2 Knights dominated the No. 5 Eagles in a Beach District showdown on Wednesday at Landstown.

“I was trying out a new move and I haven’t fully mastered that move yet, so it didn’t work out for me,” said Hall, a senior. “But I eventually got out of it.”

The wild sequence and momentum swing didn’t surprise Kellam coach Mike Benzel.

“He’s the most unorthodox guy I’ve ever coached,” Benzel said. “He’s a pinner, I’ll say that much. He pins a lot of people.”

In a match-up between two of the area’s best 160pounders, top-ranked Bryce Sanderlin of Landstown outlasted thirdranked Alex Swoope 9-1. Cam Robinson, the topranked 138-pounder, and Josh Benton (195) had pins for Landstown.
