Sources: Cam Newton will head to Patriots

-

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton has reached agreement on a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the New England Patriots, league sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen. The deal could be worth as much $7.5 million, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported.

Newton, who was plagued by injuries in recent seasons but claims to be healthy now, would to try to replace Tom Brady, who signed with Tampa Bay. Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer are the other QBs on the roster.

The Patriots got some bad news, though. The NFL fined them $1.1 million and took away a a third-round pick in the 2021 draft among punishments for their television crew filming the field and sideline during a Dec. 8 game between Cincinnati and Cleveland, league sources told ESPN. In addition, the Patriots’ TV production crews will not be allowed to shoot any games during the 2020 season.

NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith isn’t happy to see NFL players continue to work out together despite a union advisory sent out last weekend saying they should stop doing so.

During an interview with USA Today, Smith was specifically asked about social media posts from workouts by Brady and Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson and said they aren’t acting “in the best interest of player safety.”

“They’re not in the best interest of protecting our players heading into training camp, and I don’t think they are in the best interest of us getting through an entire season,” Smith told USA Today.

The Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos released Christion Jones on Sunday, a day after the former Alabama reciever/kick returner made homophobic comments on Twitter.
