Va. reports 801 new virus cases as Portsmouth, Suffolk set record highs

Virginia reported 801 new coronaviru­s cases Tuesday, bringing the state’s total to 72,443.

Tuesday’s numbers were the fifth straight day of more than 800 positive tests, as Virginia’s cases have started to trend back upward, according to data from the Virginia Department of Health.

Of the total cases in the state, 69,610 are confirmed and 2,833 are probable, meaning those patients are symptomati­c and have a known exposure to the illness.

At least 1,977 Virginians have died from the virus as of Tuesday morning, up nine from Monday.

The state’s seven-day percentage of positive viral tests increased slightly to 6.9%.

Virginia also reported 16,830 new PCR tests were performed, bringing the total to 828,017.

There have been 7,294 cases in long-term care facilities, and 1,177 deaths, according to the health department’s data.

There are 1,127 people currently hospitaliz­ed for COVID-19 throughout the state, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Associatio­n. Of those, 707 have confirmed cases and 420 are awaiting test results. So far, 9,423 patients have been discharged.

Portsmouth saw its biggest increase in new cases

Tuesday at 47, as did Suffolk with 39 new cases.

Here are the rest of the numbers for the region compared to Monday. The first number represents the number of cases reported in each locality since the pandemic began.

■ Accomack: 1,045 (up 4); 14 deaths (no change)

■ Chesapeake: 1,379 (up 53); 23 deaths (up 1)

■ Gloucester: 76 (up 7); 1 death (no change)

■ Hampton: 568 (up 24); 4 deaths (no change)

■ Isle of Wight: 237 (up 11); 9 deaths (no change)

■ James City: 378 (up 17); 16 deaths (no change)

■ Mathews: 7 (no change); 0 deaths (no change)

■ Middlesex: 17 (no change); 0 deaths (no change)

■ Newport News: 856 (up 41); 10 deaths (no change)

■ Norfolk: 1,606 (up 18); 16 deaths (no change)

■ Northampto­n: 274 (no change); 28 deaths (no change)

■ Poquoson: 23 (up 1); 0 deaths (no change)

■ Portsmouth: 761 (up 47); 19 deaths (no change)

■ Suffolk: 612 (up 39); 42 deaths (no change)

■ Virginia Beach 1,993 (up 15); 32 deaths (no change)

■ Williamsbu­rg: 85 (up 3); 6 deaths (no change)

■ York: 176 (up 8); 3 deaths (no change)

In Virginia, people older than 80 account for 3,685 of all cases and 990 deaths. Here’s how the rest of the age groups break down for cases and deaths:

■ 70-79: 3,625 cases, 497 deaths

■ 60-69: 6,978 cases, 294 deaths

■ 50-59: 10,751 cases, 123 deaths

■ 40-49: 12,584 cases, 52 deaths

■ 30-39: 13,405 cases, 15 deaths

■ 20-29: 12,877 cases, 4 deaths

■ 10-19: 5,332 cases, 0 deaths

■ 0-9: 2,447 cases, 0 deaths

The VDH did not report ages for 759 cases and two deaths.

Here are the seven-day percent positivity rates for the Health Districts around Hampton Roads: ■ Chesapeake: 13.0% (up) ■ Eastern Shore: 2.7% (no change)

■ Hampton: 10.4% (up) ■ Norfolk: 16.7% (down) ■ Peninsula: 7.1% (down) ■ Portsmouth: 12.1% (down)

■ Virginia Beach: 10.7% (up)

■ Western Tidewater: 7.7% (down)

Since the pandemic began in Virginia, 36,566 women have had cases and 978 have died, while 35,392 men have had cases and 992 have died. Of the state tally, 485 cases don’t have a reported sex and 7 deaths don’t have a reported sex.
