Virginia reports 1,084 new coronaviru­s cases

Virginia reported 1,084 new coronaviru­s cases Wednesday, bringing the state’s total to 73,527.

Wednesday’s numbers were the sixth straight day of more than 800 positive tests, as Virginia’s cases have started to trend back upward, according to data from the Virginia Department of Health.

Of the total cases in the state, 70,669 are confirmed and 2,858 are probable, meaning those patients are symptomati­c and have a known exposure to the illness.

At least 1,992 Virginians havediedfr­omthevirus­asof Wednesday morning, up 15 from Tuesday.

The state’s seven-day percentage of positive viral tests increased from 6.9% to 7.2%. However, all Hampton Roads health districts with the exception of the Peninsula Health District have rates higher than 10%. Virginia also reported 14,107 new PCR tests were performed, bringing the total to 842,124.

There have been 7,348 cases in long-term care facilities, and 1,180 deaths, according to the health department’s data.

There are 1,081 people currently hospitaliz­ed for COVID-19 throughout the state, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare

Associatio­n. Of those, 699 have confirmed cases and 382 are awaiting test results. So far, 9,527 patients have been discharged. Norfolk set another record high Wednesday with 136 new cases. Previously, the biggest increase the city saw was on July 12 with 100 new cases.

Portsmouth: 794 (up 33); 19 deaths (no change)

Suffolk: 633 (up 21); 42 deaths (no change)

50-59: 10,856 cases, 126 deaths

40-49: 12,721 cases, 53 deaths

30-39: 13,596 cases, 15 deaths

20-29: 13,159 cases, 4 deaths

10-19: 5,449 cases, 0 deaths 0-9: 2,488 cases, 0 deaths The VDH did not report ages for 769 cases and two deaths.

Since the pandemic began in Virginia, 37,153 women have had cases and 988 have died, while 35,893 men have had cases and 997 have died. Of the state tally, 481 cases don’t have a reported sex and 7 deaths don’t have a reported sex.
