904 new virus cases reported in Va.; Norfolk hits new high

Virginia reported 904 new coronaviru­s cases Thursday, bringing the state’s total to 74,431.

Thursday’s numbers were the seventh straight day of more than 800 positive tests, as Virginia’s cases have started to trend back upward, according to data from the Virginia Department of Health.

Of the total cases in the state, 71,570 are confirmed and 2,861 are probable, meaning those patients are symptomati­c and have a known exposure to the illness.

At least 2,007 Virginians have died from the virus as of Thursday morning, up 15 from Wednesday.

The state’s seven-day percentage of positive remained steady at 7.2%. However, all Hampton Roads health districts with the exception of the Peninsula Health District, the Eastern Shore and Western Tidewater have rates higher than 10%.

Virginia also reported 16,188 new PCR tests were performed, bringing the total to 858,312.

There have been 7,409 cases in long-term care facilities, and 1,184 deaths, according to the health department’s data.

There are 1,134 people currently hospitaliz­ed for COVID-19 throughout the state, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Associatio­n. Of those, 690 have confirmed cases and 444 are awaiting test results. So far, 9,644 patients have been discharged.

Norfolk set another record high Thursday with 146 new cases compared to the 136 new cases the city saw Wednesday.

Here are the rest of the numbers for the region compared to Wednesday. The first number represents the number of cases reported in each locality since the pandemic began.

■ Accomack: 1,045 (no change); 14 deaths (no change)

■ Chesapeake: 1,509 (up 68); 24 deaths (up 1)

■ Gloucester: 80 (up 1); 1 death (no change)

■ Hampton: 607 (up 15); 4 deaths (no change)

■ Isle of Wight: 245 (up 5); 9 deaths (no change)

■ James City: 390 (up 2); 16 deaths (no change)

■ Mathews: 7 (no change); 0 deaths (no change)

■ Middlesex: 18 (no change); 0 deaths (no change)

■ Newport News: 940 (up 40); 10 deaths (no change)

■ Norfolk: 1,888 (up 146); 19 deaths (up 1)

■ Northampto­n: 276 (up 1); 28 deaths (no change)

■ Poquoson: 23 (no change); 0 deaths (no change)

■ Portsmouth: 827 (up 33); 19 deaths (no change)

■ Suffolk: 647 (up 14); 44 deaths (up 2)

■ Virginia Beach 2,272 (up 135); 34 deaths (no change)

■ Williamsbu­rg: 88 (up 1); 6 deaths (no change)

■ York: 181 (up 1); 3 deaths (no change)

In Virginia, people older than 80 account for 3,779 of all cases and 1,005 deaths. Here’s how the rest of the age groups break down for cases and deaths:

■ 70-79: 3,731 cases, 504 deaths

■ 60-69: 7,123 cases, 296 deaths

■ 50-59: 10,978 cases, 127 deaths

■ 40-49: 12,837 cases, 53 deaths

■ 30-39: 13,758 cases, 16 deaths

■ 20-29: 13,396 cases, 4 deaths

■ 10-19: 5,531 cases, 0 deaths

■ 0-9: 2,516 cases, 0 deaths The VDH did not report ages for 782 cases and two deaths.

Here are the seven-day percent positivity rates for the Health Districts around Hampton Roads: ■ Chesapeake: 14.5% (up)

■ Eastern Shore: 2.8% (up)

■ Hampton: 11.4% (down) ■ Norfolk: 17.1% (up) ■ Peninsula: 8.7% (up)

■ Portsmouth: 12.1% (down)

■ Virginia Beach: 11.4% (up)

■ Western Tidewater:

8.8% (up)

Since the pandemic began in Virginia, 37,652 women have had cases and 996 have died, while 36,297 men have had cases and 1,004 have died. Of the state tally, 482 cases don’t have a reported sex and 7 deaths don’t have a reported sex.
