They’re finally back: Drive-in movies return to the Hampton Roads scene

-

Two venues are offering a drive-in movie experience this weekend in Hampton Roads. And there a few other stirrings in the arts and entertainment world. Enjoy them while you can, before the state is sent to Phase minus-4 in the great coronavirus meltdown.

Drive on in

Hunt Club Farm is hosting a drive-in movie showing of the comedy “9 to 5,” with Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, tonight. The event will benefit the Imagination Library literacy program, founded by

Dolly Parton, and the DeGood Foundation, which is based in Newport News.

Hunt Club Farm says the event will be held in accordance with social distancing rules and regulations. Gates open at 7 p.m. at 2388 London Bridge Road, Virginia Beach, for the petting farm ($5), concessions and food trucks onsite.

The movie starts at 9 p.m. There’s room for just 150 vehicles and tickets — $25 per car — are being sold only online at www.huntclubfarm.com.

Papa John’s personal pan pizzas can be preordered, and a portion of the sales will benefit the DeGood Foundation literacy program. Kona Ice of Virginia Beach and Mary’s Food will be on-site.

Drive in, too

Hampton Coliseum in Hampton will host movie nights in its parking lot through Pop Up Drive In USA.

Friday’s flicks are “Sonic The Hedgehog” at 7 p.m. and “Men In Black” at 10 p.m.

The Saturday movies are “The Addams Family” (2019) at 7 p.m. and “Fast and Furious 5” at 10 p.m.

The cost is $30 per carload, and an optional food-and-snacks bundle runs $20.

Social distancing rules will be in effect. To find out more about them and the program in general, visit www.hamptoncoliseum.org.

In honor of Jane Gardner

WHRO is paying tribute today to local TV news pioneer Jane

Gardner, who died last week of cancer.

A Richmond native, Gardner started working in Hampton Roads in the 1970s on WVEC, where she became the station’s first female news anchor and medical reporter. After 10 years she moved to rival station WTKR. A member of the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame, she was very open with her viewers about her battles with cancer and became an inspiration to many.

At 8:30 p.m. Friday, WHRO TV 15 will air its 2018 episode on her life, “Jane Gardner: Live Each Day.”

“We are all saddened by Jane’s passing. She was an inspiration to so many and she encouraged all of us to live each day in the moment. She will be greatly missed,” Bert Schmidt, president and CEO of

WHRO Public Media, said in a news release about the broadcast.
