TAYLOR RECOVERING
Chargers QB Tyrod Taylor’s reaction to an injection for his ribs injury reportedly caused the Hampton native to miss Sunday’s OT loss to the Chiefs.
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor missed Sunday’s game because he experienced complications from a pregame injection that was administered to address a rib injury, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.
With the Hampton High and Virginia Tech product taken to a hospital and having difficulty breathing, Chargers coach Anthony Lynn turned to rookie Justin Herbert, whom they drafted No. 6 overall this year. Herbert responded to the impromptu call by completing 22 of 33 for 311 yards with a touchdown and interception in an overtime loss to reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City.
Lynn said there were “complications” with Taylor’s treatment for chest pains said he is “recovering well.”
Herbert’s performance made numerous observers wonder if the former Oregon star would be the new starter even with Taylor healthy, but after the game, Lynn said Taylor was still the starting quarterback. The Chargers said he was released from a hospital Sunday night.
“If Tyrod is 100 percent, he’s our quarterback,” Lynn said. He added that Herbert is “a backup for a reason.”
If Herbert gets the nod again, he’ll be more prepared this time, as Lynn said he’ll get his rookie quarterback “more reps in practice until Tyrod’s back.”
According to Rapaport, Taylor was planning to wear a flak jacket to protect himself. He popped up on the injury report Friday, but since there was no doubt he was playing, he was removed from the final report. His status for this Sunday’s home game against Carolina is not yet clear.
