Norfolk State women cruise, even record at 1-1

Norfolk State leveled its women’s basketball record at 1-1 Sunday by breezing past Salem University 96-66 in the Spartans’ home opener before 137 at Echols Hall. Five NSU players reached double figures, led by redshirt junior Jalynn Holmes, who netted a career-high 23 points.

Junior Shekinah Howard had a career-high 18 points, while E’Lexus Davis had 18 and Jaiden Morris 14. Ta’Liyah Edmonds, a sophomore from Norview High, achieved her first collegiate double-double with career highs of 11 points and 17 rebounds.

NSU outscored Salem 27-12 in the first quarter while shooting 64%. The Spartans held Salem without a field goal for almost five minutes to start the second quarter.

All seven Spartans who played scored. Armani Franklin added seven points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals, while freshman Niya Fields contribute­d five points, six assists and two steals.

Nerea Arambarri Fernandez scored 21 to lead Salem. Inari Jones, a sophomore from Norcom High, grabbed seven rebounds for the Tigers.
