Old Dominion 70, William & Mary 47
NORFOLK — NORFOLK — Ajah Wayne had 21 points and 15 rebounds Thursday night, and Delisha Milton-Jones achieved her first victory as Old Dominion’s coach as the Monarchs (1-1) won their home opener over W&M (0-1) at Chartway Arena.
Wayne, a junior, was only one rebound short of her career high. Amari Young added 16 points and eight rebounds, and Victoria Morris contributed 14 points.
ODU lost its opener 55-37 at George Washington, shooting just 26.3% from the field, but the Monarchs exceeded that point total by halftime in taking a 38-24 lead after the first 20 minutes.
Having trailed by as many as 19 points, the Tribe cut its deficit to 44-38, but ODU quickly regained command and pulled away again, improving to 59-7 all-time in the series.
For W&M, which shot just 26.6% (17 of
64), Sydney Wagner had 14 points and Bailey Eichner grabbed 14 rebounds.
ACC MEN N.C. State 90, UMass-Lowell 59
UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Devon Daniels scored 18 points, while Cam Hayes and Jericole Hellems each had 17 as the Wolfpack improved to 3-0.
All three players were in double figures by halftime as N.C. State led 43-19. Hellems scored 13 points, and Hayes and Daniels each had 10. The River Hawks were just 8-of-24 shooting (33.3%) in the half.
Daniels scored five points during a 12-0 run in the first half for a 22-point lead. He scored the first four points of the second half as N.C. State cruised, leading by as many as 34
Hayes, a freshman, had been a solid replacement at point guard for Markell Johnson, who left N.C. State ranked third in career assists. Hayes entered with 10 assists and one turnover in his first two games, and had six assists with one turnover Thursday.
Darion Jordan-Thomas scored 12 points for UMass-Lowell (1-3).
STATE MEN Hampton-Regent canceled
Hampton announced that its planned home opener, Dec. 10 against Regent, was canceled because of COVID concerns with the Royals. Regent, based in Virginia Beach, was supposed to play at Longwood on Thursday night, but that game was postponed indefinitely. Hampton next plays at 7 p.m. Monday at Norfolk State, and its home game against now-quarantined William & Mary was moved back one day to Dec. 16.

INDIANAPOLIS — Joel Ayayi matched his career high with 21 points and Andrew Nembhard and Corey Kispert each had 19, and Gonzaga (3-0) rallied to beat West Virginia (3-1) in the Jimmy V Classic.
The Bulldogs struggled to get in sync early and again after freshman Jalen Suggs injured an ankle in the first half, but used a late 13-4 run to take control and scored six straight points late to seal it.
Derek Culver led West Virginia with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
No. 2 Baylor 82, No. 5 Illinois 69
INDIANAPOLIS — Adam Flagler scored 18 points and Baylor (3-0) pulled away late to beat Illinois (3-1) in the second game of the Jimmy V Classic.
Baylor won for the first time this season with coach Scott Drew on the sideline. He missed the previous two games after a positive COVID-19 test, but watched his team swing the game with its trademark defense in the second half.

OMAHA, Neb. — Xavier Pinson scored 19 of his 22 points in the second half and Missouri (2-0) overcame a mid-game lull and late Oregon flurry to beat the Ducks (0-1).
