No. 5 Kansas edges No. 8 Creighton

Jalen Wilson hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 42 seconds remaining, then watched as Marcus Zegarowski missed the last of three free throws after fouling him with 1.1 seconds left, allowing No. 5 Kansas to escape with a 73-72 victory over No. 8 Creighton on Tuesday night in Lawrence, Kansas.

Wilson finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Christian Braun scored 14 points, missing a foul shot that could have clinched the game with 12.5 seconds to go, and David McCormack contribute­d 13 points as the Jayhawks (5-1) won their fifth straight against the Bluejays (3-1).

■ No. 7 Houston paused all team-related basketball activities because of positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing. The No. 7 Cougars postponed home games this week against Sam Houston State and Rice (Saturday). The games likely will be canceled. Houston’s games against Central Florida on Dec. 15 and Alabama on Dec. 19 also are up in the air. ... No. 9 Villanova’s home game against Big East opponent DePaul originally scheduled for Sunday was postponed because of COVID-19 issues in the Blue Demons program. DePaul hasn’t played this season.

Baseball: The Royals and former All-Star 1B Carlos Santana agreed to a two-year, $17 million, according to reports. Santana, 34, hit .199 with eight HRs and 30 RBIs for the Indians in 60 games during the shortened 2020 season.

College football: Former Maryland QB and College Football Hall of Famer Jack Scarbath died Sunday night. He was 90.

Scarbath was the Heisman Trophy runnerup in 1952. He was the No. 3 overall in the 1953 NFL draft by Washington and had a short pro career.

NFL: Broncos CB A.J. Bouye is facing a multigame suspension for violating the league’s policy on PEDs, ESPN reported. ... The Cardinals activated 11-time Pro Bowl WR Larry Fitzgerald. After missing a pair of losses, Fitzgerald, 37, may be available for Sunday’s game against the Giants. ... Steelers LB Robert Spillane will miss an undetermin­ed amount of time with an apparent left knee, ESPN reported. He will not need surgery and is expected to return this season. The Steelers already had lost LB Bud Dupree to a season-ending knee injury last week.

Soccer: Three-time European champ Manchester United was knocked out of the Champions League after a 3-2 road loss to German club Leipzig, which advanced to the last 16. In other notable action, Cristiano Ronaldo scored two penalties to lead Juventus past Barcelona 3-0. It was the Spanish power’s first Champions League home loss in seven years. Both clubs already had advanced to the knockout stage, but Juventus won the group with the victory.

Tennis: Sofia Kenin was named WTA player of the year after winning the Australian Open in January for her first Grand Slam title and finishing as the runner-up at the French Open in October. The 22-year-old from Florida went 16-2 at the three Grand Slams played in 2020 and ended the shortened season with a careerbest ranking of No. 4.
