Four past members named to ’21 Hall of Fame class
Winston Brown, Angelo Celesia, Jim Dare and Brian Sagedy get nod
The Tidewater Striders announced four inductees into its Hall of Fame class of 2021 this week: The inductees are Winston Brown, Angelo Celesia, Jim Dare and Brian Sagedy, and will be honored in a ceremony on Feb. 6 at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.
Brown, a longtime cross country and track and field coach at Fork Union Military Academy, has led his teams to 23 state titles. He also spent time coaching in the Portsmouth school system and was the race director for the Portsmouth City Park 5K run. As a competitor, Brown won a Tidewater Striders scholarship and was part of two national championship cross country teams with Brevard Junior College before going to Old Dominion.
Celesia organized the most successful youth running program in the country as recognized by the Road Runners Club of America, helping to take the New Energy youth running program to new heights. He won the 2008 Tidewater Striders President’s award, three Community Service Volunteer awards and was named the Road Runners Club of America Outstanding Youth Program Director in 2012.
Dare, who began volunteering for the Striders in the 1990s when he was stationed in Norfolk with the U.S. Navy, served as a Board member from 2015-19. He volunteered at a number of races, and was named the Race Director of the Year and Race Volunteer of the Year in 2004. As a competitor, Dare was an All-American at the Naval Academy and was named an alternate for the U.S. Olympic team in 1972.
The Tidewater Striders Race Director of the Year in 2006, Sagedy served as the race director for a number of races and was on the Striders Board of Directors from 1993-2004. He also volunteered and won the Tidewater Striders President’s Award for outstanding service and dedication in 1992.
