ODU women’s contest canceled

Old Dominion’s women’s basketball game at Delaware State, scheduled for today, was canceled due to contact-tracing protocols and an abundance of caution. There are currently no positive COVID-19 cases in either program.

ODU is scheduled to open Conference USA play against Florida Internatio­nal at Chartway Arena on Friday and Saturday, at 2 p.m. both days.

College men’s basketball: After a 2-0 week when he set a career-high with a 29-point game, Hampton senior Davion Warren was named the Big South Conference Player of the Week.

Warren averaged 22 points, seven rebounds and three steals in two wins at Charleston Southern as the Pirates started conference play. He had 15 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists in the Pirates’ 67-55 series-opening win, then followed with 29 points and eight rebounds in Hampton’s 70-68 victory last Tuesday. Warren was 13 of 27 (48.1%) from the field in those games, including 5 of 12 from 3-point range, and made 13 of 14 free throws.

Hampton (3-4, 2-0) returns home Wednesday and Thursday to face Gardner-Webb. ...

Hofstra senior guard Jalen Ray, a Hampton High graduate, repeated as the Colonial Athletic Associatio­n Player of the Week. He netted 19 of his 23 points in the second half of a 78-73 victory at Richmond, helping the Pride erase a nine-point deficit. Hitting 7 of 14 shots from the floor, Ray joined Hofstra’s career 1,000-point club. ...

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced that Pittsburgh’s game at Duke, scheduled for tonight, was postponed indefinite­ly following a positive test, quarantini­ng and contact tracing within the Pittsburgh program. ...

Virginia fell seven places to No. 23 in Monday’s Associated Press poll after absorbing a 98-75 lesson Saturday from No. 1 Gonzaga, which got 62 first-place votes to No. 2 Baylor’s two. The Cavaliers (4-2) are one spot ahead of Virginia Tech, which stayed at No. 24. ...

In Monday’s games, Eric Ayala scored 17 points, while Aaron Wiggins added 15 points and nine rebounds to lead Maryland (6-3, 1-2 Big Ten) to a 70-64 upset at No. 6 Wisconsin (8-2, 2-1). ... Joel Ayayi hit 4 of 5 3-point shots and finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds as No. 1 Gonzaga (8-0) beat Northern Arizona 88-58 to extend its win streak to 42. ... College football: Virginia Tech tight end James Mitchell revealed he will stay for the 2021 season. He had 26 catches for 435 yards and four touchdowns in 2020. ...

No. 10 Florida will be without its top four pass-catchers in the Cotton Bowl against No. 8 Oklahoma. Receivers Trevon Grimes and Kadarius Toney announced Monday they are skipping the game to prepare for their NFL futures. Fellow receiver Jacob Copeland announced he won’t make the trip after testing positive for COVID-19. Tight end Kyle Pitts opted out of the bowl hours after the Southeaste­rn Conference championsh­ip game.
