Jersey number the Bruins will retire Feb. 18 to honor Willie O’Ree, who was the NHL’s first Black player. O’Ree, 85, broke the color barrier when he suited up for the Bruins on Jan. 18, 1958, against the Canadiens. He went on to play two more seasons for the Bruins, and retired from pro hockey in 1979. O’Ree was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2018 as part of the “Builder” category, which honors those who have made significan­t contributi­ons to the sport.
