State teams’ victory day
The men’s teams of No. 20 Virginia Tech (with Keve Aluma), William & Mary and Norfolk State all won competitive games Sunday.

No. 20 Virginia Tech 64, Wake Forest 60
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Tyrece Radford scored 20 points Sunday as the Hokies (11-2, 5-1) stayed in the thick of the conference race, overcoming the Demon Deacons (3-5, 0-5). It’s just the second time Virginia Tech has been 5-1 in the ACC.
Radford hit 6 of 7 field goals and 8 of 9 free throws, and freshman David N’Guessan added a seasonhigh 13 points, making all five of his field-goal tries and all three foul shots. Hunter Cattoor also scored 13.
Radford’s jumper with 6:34 to go gave the Hokies the lead to stay, 48-46.
Ismael Massoud led Wake Forest with 12 points off the bench.

EVANSTON, Ill. — Luka Garza had 17 points and 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes for Iowa.
Joe Wieskamp had 16 points and CJ Fredrick added 13 as the Hawkeyes (12-2, 6-1 Big Ten) won their fifth straight. Iowa and Michigan are tied for the conference lead.

HOUSTON — Quentin Grimes scored 18 points, Justin Gorham added 15 points and nine rebounds, and the Cougars (11-1, 6-1 American) cruised after going ahead 38-9 against Central Florida (3-5, 1-4), which lost its fourth game in a row.

BOSTON — Lonnie Grayson had 21 points and Josh Caldwell 17 for Army (8-3, 4-2 Patriot League), which earned its fourth straight road victory.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Kayla Wells had 19 points as Texas A&M put its first loss of the season behind it in a big way.
The Aggies (13-1, 5-1 SEC), coming off a 65-61 overtime loss at unranked LSU, scored the first five points against Mississippi State (8-4, 3-3) and never trailed. Myah Taylor scored 14 points for MSU, which is guided by former Old Dominion coach Nikki McCray-Penson.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kianna Smith scored 16 points for the Cardinals (12-0, 5-0 ACC), who, thanks to Stanford’s loss, could gain their first No. 1 ranking in program history when the new AP poll comes out today.
The Seminoles (4-2, 3-2) played for the first time since New Year’s Eve due to COVID-19 issues. They dressed and played just eight of their roster of 13.

LOS ANGELES — Charisma Osborne scored 28 points, eight in overtime, as UCLA (8-2, 6-2 Pac-12) won its third in a row.

MADISON, Wis. — Chloe Bibby had 17 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Terrapins (11-1, 7-0 Big Ten) against the Badgers (3-8, 0-8).

W&M 69, Drexel 53
WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary (5-6, 2-4) registered one of its most notable victories of eighth-year coach Ed Swanson’s tenure, moving ahead to stay in the second quarter against the Colonial Athletic Association’s predicted No. 2 team.
The victory avenged W&M’s 64-58 loss the day before at Kaplan Arena.
Much of the Tribe’s success stemmed from four players. Sydney Wagner had 22 points on 9-of-14 field-goal shooting. Bre Bellamy added 19 points and six rebounds.
Bailey Eichner nearly posted a triple-double; she had 13 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. Lake Taylor High product Chaniqwa Gilliam had nine points and six rebounds.
Hannah Nihill led Drexel (6-3, 3-1) with 18 points, but the Tribe led by double digits throughout the second half.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina A&T (6-1, 4-0) held Norfolk State (1-5, 0-2) to 20% field-goal shooting Sunday to finish a two-game MEAC sweep.
The Aggies outrebounded NSU 53-36 and held an 18-5 edge in second-chance points. Jasmen Walton scored a game-high 14 points for the Aggies, who held the Spartans to their fewest points since they scored a school recordlow 23 in a loss to Virginia on Dec. 28, 2012.
NSU senior forward Mangela Ngandjui pulled down a careerhigh 17 rebounds and added seven points, three blocks and three steals.
Wake Forest 67, Virginia Tech 64
BLACKSBURG — Ivana Raca’s 17 points and 19 rebounds guided the Demon Deacons (7-4, 4-3 ACC) past the Hokies (7-5, 2-5).
Elizabeth Kitley had 18 points and 21 rebounds for Tech. But after a Kitley basket tied the score at 62 with 4:26 to go, the Hokies didn’t score again until just one second remained.

ELON, N.C. — Evonna McGill scored 16 points on 7-of-7 shooting off the bench as the Phoenix (5-3, 1-1) earned a split of a two-game CAA series with an eye-opening rout of the Dukes (6-4, 2-1).
Postponement: VCU paused team activities because of COVID19 protocols, postponing Sunday’s home game against Massachusetts.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Isaiah Wong had 30 points, seven rebounds and six assists as the Hurricanes (6-6, 2-5 ACC) ended an 18-game skid against top-25 opponents.
Louisville (9-2, 4-1) rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit and got within 68-64 on Matt Slazinski’s three free throws with 2:21 remaining. Cross’ 3-pointer with 1:29 left gave Miami another seven-point margin.
No. 1 Gonzaga 73, Saint Mary’s 59
MORAGA, Calif. — Corey Kispert had 17 points and five rebounds for Gonzaga (14-0, 5-0 West Coast), which overcame a nine-point first-half deficit against the Gaels (9-5, 0-3) for its 18th straight victory spanning the past two seasons.
A 4.5-magnitude earthquake in the South Bay shook the gym early in the second half. Play continued with no disruption.

WACO, Texas — Ashley Joens scored 14 of her 27 points in the fourth quarter as Iowa State (-4, 5-1 Big 12) ended the Lady Bears’ 61-game home court winning streak.
Baylor (8-2, 3-1 Big 12) played for the first time in two weeks because of a pause in the program after coach Kim Mulkey tested positive for COVID-19.
