Bryant, Norfolk State survive overtime clash against winless Delaware State

- Staff report

Facing spirited opposition from a foe seeking its first victory, Norfolk State’s men escaped Sunday with an 83-79 overtime victory at Delaware State, giving the Spartans a two-game sweep of their weekend series in Dover.

Joe Bryant Jr. paced NSU (8-4, 3-1) with 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists. The Spartans trailed 75-71 before going on a decisive 9-0 overtime run, which included four Bryant free throws. Bryant’s second pair of foul shots put NSU ahead 80-75 with 27 seconds remaining.

Also for NSU, guard Devante

Carter had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Tyrese Jenkins had 13 points and five rebounds.

Pinky Wiley led DSU (0-9, 0-4) with 29 points, while Myles Carter had 17.

NSU led 37-29 at halftime, but the Hornets controlled much of the second half, leading 65-57 with 5:36 on the clock, but a 10-0 run returned the edge to NSU. Devante Carter’s two free throws with 41 seconds left for a 69-69 tie were the last points of regulation, and both teams missed shots to win after that.

The Spartans are scheduled to return to action with 1 p.m. road games in Baltimore next Saturday and Sunday against Coppin State.
