Knicks trade for Rose

Derrick Rose is reuniting with Tom Thibodeau after a trade that brings him back to New York.

The Knicks agreed to acquire the former NBA MVP from the Pistons on Sunday, according to reports.

The Knicks will send Dennis Smith Jr. and a second-round pick to Detroit.

Once the deal is completed, it will reunite Rose, 32, with Thibodeau, his coach with the Bulls when the guard became the youngest MVP in league history at 22 in 2011.

Rose later spent one season with the Knicks, averaging 18 points in 2016-17, before rejoining Thibodeau again with the Timberwolv­es. Rose joined the Pistons last season.

Rose was one of the NBA’s most explosive players early in his career, the superstar who led Thibodeau’s defensive-minded teams to the best record in the league. But a series of knee injuries followed, and neither he nor the Bulls could duplicate that early success.

But Rose remains a productive player as a reserve, averaging about 18 points in each of the two previous seasons. He’s averaging 14.2 per game this season . ...

College basketball: The SEC postponed the Georgia-Texas A&M and Florida-Tennessee games scheduled for Wednesday night, citing a combinatio­n of positive COVID-19 tests, contact tracing and subsequent quarantini­ng of individual­s within the Texas A&M and No. 22 Florida programs. Georgia instead will visit No. 11 Tennessee on Wednesday. That game was initially scheduled for March 3.

Golf: Top-ranked Dustin Johnson shot a final-round 2-under 68 to win the Saudi Internatio­nal for the second time in three years. Johnson, who also was runner-up in 2020, finished two strokes clear of Tony Finau (67) and England’s Justin Rose (65). It was Johnson’s highest-scoring round of the tournament at Royal Greens Golf Club, but he still finished at 15 under overall. Scotland’s Calum Hill eagled the par-5 18th to finish in a tie for fourth with France’s Victor Perez.

NHL: Chandler Stephenson scored twice, including the winner early in the third period, and the host Golden Knights beat the Kings 4-3. The Knights improved to 7-1-1 and moved into a first-place tie atop the West Division with the Blues and Avalanche, who are shut down due to COVID-19 protocols . ...

Givani Smith had a goal and an assist to help the visiting Detroit Red Wings end an eight-game skid with a 4-1 victory over the Florida Panthers.

Soccer: Manchester City beat Liverpool 4-1. It was the defending Premier League champ’s third straight home loss. City moved five points clear of rival Manchester United atop the league table.
