Pirates add former Va. Tech receiver from Lafayette High

- By Larry Rubama

Hampton University football coach Robert Prunty continued his recent recruitment wins on Monday with the addition former Virginia Tech wide receiver Hezekiah Grimsley.

Grimsley, a former standout for Lafayette High, played in 35 games over three seasons for the Hokies before he entered the transfer portal last year.

“I think it’s a great fit for him to come back home and a great fit for us,” Prunty said. “It’s always great to get local talent to come back home.”

Grimsley, 6 feet and 175 pounds, was a three-star prospect out of Lafayette. His best season with Virginia Tech was in 2018, when he had 31 receptions for 382 yards and a touchdown. Also a punt returner, Grimsley

will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Also on Monday, Prunty announced that wide receiver Brycen Thomas, a former player at the Naval Academy Prep School, will add to the Pirates’ depth at the position.

“Brycen has tremendous ability,” Prunty said about the 6-foot-4, 190-pound Thomas. “He has great length and can really stretch the field.”

Grimsley and Thomas join some other recent impressive transfers, including highly touted wide receiver Shaquon Anderson-Butts and former Old Dominion lineman James Fagan, along with linemen Oluwaseun Adewumi, Makhi Armstrong and D’Andre Satchell.

“I think the pandemic has forced us to be patient and take our time,” Prunty said about the Pirates, who did not play any games this school year because of COVID-19. “By doing that, I think we’re getting better players.”
