John Edward Hubbard, 81, of Newport News, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 26, 2021, with his loving wife of 59 years at his side.

John was preceded in death by his parents, older sister, Seymour Roland, twin sister “Jo” Sandridge, and in-laws, Clarence and Florence Stutz whom he loved very much. He is survived by his wife Claire; his children, Brian Hubbard (Anna), Joel Hubbard (Christie), and Ty Hubbard (Paige) of Newport News; Steven Hubbard (Susie) of Forest, VA; Janet Garihan (Barton) of Winchester, VA; Kim Griffin of Tampa, FL; and Meagan Gualtiere (Gina) of Boston, MA.

John was the proud grandfather of John David Hubbard, Brooke Hubbard, Lauren Hubbard, Philip Hubbard, Emily Hubbard, Matthew Griffin, and Rocco Gualtiere; great-grandfather of Jaxon Hubbard, Olivia Hubbard, and Ava Hubbard; and his brother, Charles David Hubbard of South Carolina.

The Bible defines a father as a leader and protector of his family, who gives an example of Christ's love by being loving towards his children and their mother; a man of strong faith who brings his children up knowing right from wrong. In other words, the definition of Father is John Hubbard. A man that lived his life by example through hard work, integrity, and charity of time and talents. John died a rich man in that he was loved and loved well, valued by his family, friends, and the many children whose lives he touched. He was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Greatgrandfather, Friend, and Foster parent. The Hubbard home served as a host family for Foreign Servicemen during the Vietnam War.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener, hunter, and fisherman. He founded, and then operated, Hubbard Tree Care for more than 50 years; his legacy continues through the work of his sons. He was honored to be a member of the International Society of Arboriculture, a member of the America Society of Consulting Arborist, and was an ISA Certified Arborist. He was a member of Hilton Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at North Riverside Baptist Church.
