Spartans return with big victory

Armani Franklin scored 19 points to lead a balanced attack and Norfolk State forced 34 turnovers in an 83-64 MEAC women’s basketball victory over North Carolina Central on Wednesday at McDougald-McLendon Arena in Durham, North Carolina.

It was the first game for the Spartans (4-7, 3-4) since Feb. 21 in what has been a season full of postponeme­nts and cancellati­ons due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jalynn Holmes added 18 points for NSU, while Mangela Ngandjui had 11 and E’Lexus Davis 10. Shine Strickland-Gills and Camryn Platt-Morris each added nine points. Ngandjui and Strickland-Gills pulled down 10 rebounds each.

Holmes had five of the Spartans’ 20 steals.

Anissa Rivera paced North Carolina Central (3-11, 1-6) with 19 points, while Faith Williams had 15.

The two teams will meet again at 4 p.m. today to close out the regular season.

Detectives are looking at data from the “black box” of Tiger Woods’ SUV to get a clearer picture of what occurred during the Southern California rollover crash that seriously injured the golf star, authoritie­s said Wednesday. The Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department said traffic investigat­ors executed a search warrant Monday to retrieve data from the device from the Genesis SUV that Woods, above, was driving. The 2021 GV80, made by Hyundai, is likely to have a newer version of event data recorders nicknamed “black boxes” after more sophistica­ted recorders in airplanes. The devices store a treasure trove of data for authoritie­s to review. Woods suffered a serious leg injury when the SUV he was driving went off a road and rolled over on a downhill stretch known for crashes. Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Woods wasn’t drunk and was driving alone in good weather when the SUV hit a raised median, went across oncoming lanes and rolled several times. The sheriff said the new data could provide more informatio­n on the cause of the accident.
