Kansas, Miles agree to part ways

Kansas athletic director Jeff Long said he pointedly asked his longtime friend, Les Miles, during the hiring process three years ago to be next football coach of the Jayhawks whether there was anything in his background that could potentiall­y embarrass the university.

Miles, according to Long, replied, “No.” The school and Miles, 67, agreed to a settlement late Monday, just days after he was placed on administra­tive leave amid sexual misconduct allegation­s from his tenure at LSU.

Baseball: Yankees left-handed reliever Zack Britton will undergo arthroscop­ic surgery to remove a bone chip in his left elbow. Britton likely will miss the first few months of the season . ... Rangers right-handed reliever Jonathan Hernandez will not pitch for four weeks because of a ligament sprain in his right elbow.

College basketball: Auburn freshman G Justin Powell plans to transfer. Powell averaged 11.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 10 games before his season ended after suffering a serious concussion.

NBA: Meyers Leonard of the Heat used an anti-Semitic slur while playing a video game that was being livestream­ed, prompting both the team and the league office to quickly open investigat­ions into the matter. Leonard, a 7-foot center in his ninth season, sustained a season-ending shoulder injury in January . ... 76ers All-Stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons will both miss Thursday’s game against the Bulls and Simmons also will miss Friday’s game against the

Wizards due to the same COVID-19 contact tracing that kept both from participat­ing in Sunday’s All-Star Game in Atlanta. If both continue to test negative, Embiid will be eligible to return Friday, while Simmons will be able to return Sunday.

NFL: The Patriots acquired OT Trent Brown from the Raiders in a trade also involving draft picks after agreeing to a restructur­ed one-year contract worth up to $11 million with him, ESPN reported. Brown, 27, played for the Patriots in 2018, starting every game in the team’s Super Bowl championsh­ip season.

NHL: Sabres captain Jack Eichel didn’t play against the Flyers because of an upper-body injury. The team didn’t provide additional informatio­n about the severity of the injury or a timeline for his return . ... The Predators placed captain Roman Josi on the IR list. He’s week to week with an upper-body injury.

Soccer: Sérgio Oliveira scored in extra time to send 10-man Porto into the quarterfin­als of the Champions League despite a thrilling 3-2 loss at Juventus. Porto advanced on away goals after the matchup ended 4-4 on aggregate. In other action, Erling Haaland scored twice for host Borussia Dortmund to advance to the quarterfin­als after a 2-2 draw with Sevilla. Dortmund advanced 5-4 on aggregate.

Also: Paul Pierce, Chris Bosh, Chris Webber, Michael Cooper, Lauren Jackson, Ben Wallace and Yolanda Griffith are among 14 finalists in the 2021 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class. The class will be unveiled May 16.
