Maury-Wilson game canceled

- — Larry Rubama and Marty O’Brien, staff writers

The high school football game between Maury and Wilson today was canceled due to COVID protocols being taken by the Presidents.

Here’s a look at today’s games that are still scheduled:

Beach District Tallwood (0-3) at Kempsville (1-2) Time:

Buzz:

1 p.m.

Kempsville hasn’t played since the Chiefs beat Landstown two weeks ago. Last week’s game against Salem was canceled due to COVID issues. Tallwood tries to snap a six-game losing streak dating to 2019.

Larry: Tallwood 21-20.

Marty: Kempsville 34-27.

Peninsula District

Menchville (2-0) vs. No. 9 Warwick (2-1)

Time: Noon.

Site: Todd Stadium

Buzz: Projecting the postseason has never been more difficult, but this has the look of a Class 4 Region A playoff-elimination game. Javoni Hales has 281 yards rushing and two touchdowns in Menchville’s two wins, while Jaylen Givens has 106 yards receiving and two TDs. Warwick counters with dualthreat QB Derick Nixon and speedy RB Bryce Buchanan, but has been plagued by penalties and turnovers. Larry: Warwick 27-26.

Marty: Menchville 14-13.

Bethel (0-1) vs. Hampton (1-2) Time:

Site:

Buzz:

Noon.

Darling Stadium

Versatile Isaiah Smith had a 91-yard kickoff return and 2-yard touchdown — along with a 42-yard touchdown reception nullified by a penalty — in Bethel’s 20-14 loss to Menchville. But no one player is going to beat Hampton’s tough

defense, and the Crabbers, with several offensive weapons, have played three games since the Bruins last played.

Larry: Hampton 33-23.

Marty: Hampton 22-14.

Kecoughtan (0-1) vs. Denbigh (1-2) Time:

Site:

Buzz:

5 p.m.

Todd Stadium Kecoughtan was solid in its long-awaited debut, a 33-7 loss to Phoebus. Denbigh, which followed the high of a win over Heritage with a blowout loss to Menchville, has struggled offensively.

Larry: Kecoughtan 20-13. Marty: Kecoughtan 28-14.

Bay Rivers District York (1-1) vs. Tabb (2-1) Time:

Site:

Buzz:

1 p.m.

Bailey Field

The rivalry produces close, high-quality games annually, and this should be no exception. York has not played since March 6 while on COVID protocol. Tabb, which beat Poquoson 27-0 last week, will counter York’s more explosive talent with two big running backs in Corey Kidwell and Xavier Martin — who split 185 yards rushing against Poquoson almost evenly — and a steady quarterback in Emmit Marks.

Larry: York 27-23.

Marty: Tabb 21-20.

Smithfield (1-0) vs. Warhill (3-1) Time:

Site:

Buzz:

1 p.m.

Wanner Stadium

Smithfield opened impressively with an upset win at York, but has been sidelined since March 6 on COVID protocol. Warhill got 259 yards rushing from quarterback Shaheim Taylor last week in its 39-7 win over Jamestown. Smithfield QB Cade White threw for 231 yards against York. Larry: Warhill 26-20.

Marty: Smithfield 20-19.
