FIU outslugs ODU in series opener

Old Dominion fell 15-12 to Florida Internatio­nal in a series opener Friday in Norfolk that began Conference USA competitio­n for both teams.

The Golden Panthers (9-9) overcame a 6-2 deficit after two innings, taking the lead for good with a four-run fifth. ODU (14-5) trailed 15-7 before a five-run eighth.

Justin Farmer had two runs and five RBIs for FIU. He and Juan Teixeira, who scored four runs, were among four Panthers who collected three hits.

Andy Garriola drove in five runs for the Monarchs. He and Kyle Battle socked home runs.

The teams are scheduled for a 2 p.m. doublehead­er today.

Sparked by two Tyler Locklear home runs VCU (10-10) roughed up William & Mary starter Wade Strain for eight runs and nine hits in 4 ⅓ innings and held on to beat the Tribe 8-6 at Plumeri Park.

Locklear had five RBIs and Michael Haydak had three hits, including a two-run single in the fourth. Jack Cone batted 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs for the Tribe (4-10). Hunter Hart went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

The teams will reconvene at 1 p.m. today at The Diamond in Richmond for a doublehead­er to conclude the three-game set.

Coppin State outlasted Norfolk State 13-12 in the opener of a four-game MEAC series in Maryland, but the Spartans earned a doublehead­er split by winning the second game 4-1.

James Deloatch pitched a five-hitter and Dionte Brown drove in two runs for NSU (5-14, 1-1) in the victory.

The two teams will play another doublehead­er at 1 p.m. today.
