The world lost a beloved mother, Connie R. Burling, 66, on December 10, 2020 in Statesboro, Georgia. Connie was born in Freeport, Texas to Frank Rutherford & Maryan Shannon, on October 4, 1955. She graduated from Lafayette High School in Williamsburg, Virginia and attended Anderson College in Anderson, South Carolina. She married John B. Burling, Jr on December 20, 1980 in Williamsburg, Virginia. Connie worked with her beloved students for York County Schools for many years as a paraeducator, before retiring and moving to Statesboro, Georgia. Her true joy in life was helping young people discover a passion for learning.

Connie was known for her kind heart and being a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had an unparalleled zest for life and an infectious laugh and smile. She had welcoming arms, warm hugs, and kindness for everyone she met. Connie enjoyed spending time with her family and caring for others. Connie was immensely proud of being a Gigi to her three grandchildren and leaves behind many beautiful memories.

Connie was survived by her loving husband of 40 years John B. Burling, Jr., who sadly was reunited with her on February 16, 2021. She is survived by her mother (Maryan Shannon); stepmother (Vonnie Rutherford); children (Michael & Mikaela Burling and Scott & Sarah Burling), grandchildren (Adalyn Burling, Lyla Burling and Colton Burling); her sisters, brother in-laws and brother (Terrye & Jim Bennett, Karan Djordjevic, Cheryl Spackman, and Kenny Rutherford); several nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving friends. Connie was preceded in death by her father (Frank Rutherford). While Connie’s family grieves her loss, they are choosing to remember Connie in a way that honors her spirit. Her family invites the community to join them in a Celebration of Life Ceremony. It will take place at Waters Edge Church Yorktown Campus (6830 George Washington Memorial Hwy, Yorktown, VA) on Friday, April 23rd, 2021 at 1:00pm in combination with her late husband’s Celebration of Life. A private interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park Cemetery for immediate family.

The family of Connie R. Burling wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the Doctors and staff at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
