Shutout keeps Poquoson rolling

After starting the season 2-2 with a difficult slate that included matchups against rival Tabb and Collegiate School of Richmond, the No. 6 Poquoson field hockey team seems to have found its groove.

Poquoson’s latest win, a 5-0 shutout of No. 8 Great Bridge, is the Islanders’ sixth in a row.

Avery Jackson netted a pair of goals and Skyler Brown, Allison Teubert and Ava Cook added a goal and an assist each for the Islanders, who led 1-0 at halftime before breaking the game open. Poquoson was dominant on both sides of the field, finishing with 11 corners and 18 shots on goal, while goalkeeper Brooke Martin earned the shutout with two saves.

During the win streak, Poquoson has also earned a victory over Western Branch, which is now No. 9 in the 757Teamz Top 15.

No. 2 Cox cruises in a showdown

In a boys volleyball battle between No. 2 and No. 3, Cox put together an impressive victory.

Daniel Hurley finished with 19 kills and nine digs as the Falcons defeated third-ranked Princess Anne in straight sets 25-20, 25-17, 25-20.

Cox’s Logan Manning added eight kills and Kyle Schlaepfer had 32 assists.

Norfolk Academy routs rival

Norfolk Academy continued an impressive field hockey season, prevailing over Cape Henry in the latest edition of a long-standing rivalry.

Ashley Huddleston had a goal and two assists and Joji Purdy and Lizzie Adams scored a pair of goals each for the No. 2 Bulldogs in a 6-1 win over the No. 10 Dolphins.

Brooke Bettencour­t also scored for Norfolk Academy, while Gini Kainer had the goal for Cape Henry.

Both schools top the VISAA state standings in their respective divisions.

Ocean Lakes earned a big Beach District field hockey victory over Tallwood as Kaitlyn Hertz found the back of the cage eight minutes into overtime.

Hertz’s goal, which was unassisted, was the only score in a 1-0 victory.

This is the second win of the season for Ocean Lakes, which has endured a tough slate to start its campaign, including games against Top 15 teams Cox, Kellam and Princess Anne.

Field hockey: First Colonial’s

Finley Payne compiled her second six-goal game of the season to help power the No. 3 Patriots to a 14-0 win over Green Run.

Boys volleyball: Top-ranked Indian River ran its record to 17-0 with a 25-6, 25-15, 25-8 win over King’s Fork.

Girls volleyball: DeJeah Hoffmann had nine kills and Brielle Peltonen added 13 aces and 16 digs as Landstown topped Kempsville in five sets 25-12, 18-25, 25-15, 23-25, 15-12.

Boys soccer: With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Matthew Byrne scored the eventual game-winner for Norfolk Collegiate in a 1-0 win over Steward. Briggs McLemore had six saves to earn the shutout.

Field hockey: Delaney Ogden finished with a hat trick as Kempsville defeated Salem 3-0 in

a Beach District matchup.

Girls volleyball: Audrey Muth filled up the stat sheet with 12 kills, 16 digs, six blocks and five aces to help lead No. 6 Peninsula Catholic over No. 14 Catholic in straight sets.

Field hockey: Malena Magnano scoredboth­goalsforNo.11Kellamin a 2-1 win over No. 12 Princess Anne.

Boys volleyball: Joey Valencia dished out 30 assists in a hardfought win for No. 6 Great Bridge over No. 10 Western Branch in four sets, 32-30, 23-25, 25-23, 25-17.

Girls tennis: Norfolk Collegiate remained unbeaten against Hampton Roads foes this season, shutting out Steward 9-0 on Old Dominion’s courts. The Oaks, led by Julianna Selig at No. 1 singles, lead the TCIS and have only lost to Richmond-area powers Collegiate and St. Catherine’s.
