Cox tested, but remains unbeaten

Top-ranked Cox found itself in the midst of a closer game than it has played against Beach District opponents so far this season, defeating No. 12 Princess Anne 2-1 in field hockey Thursday.

Megan Spear led Cox with a goal and an assist and Addie Froehlich also scored as the Falcons stayed unbeaten.

This was just the third goal allowed by Cox all season. The Falcons, ranked No. 2 in the nation by MaxFieldHo­ckey.com, posted seven straight shutouts before allowing a goal against Assumption High from Louisville, Kentucky, in the Ring of Honor Tournament last weekend at the Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach. Assumption is No. 21 in MaxFieldHo­ckey’s rankings.

Loomis leads Granby

Amelie Loomis raced to a second-place individual finish to lead the Granby girls to a team win in an Eastern District cross country meet.

Loomis finished with a time of 20 minutes, 31.27 seconds, just behind Norview’s Cassidy Fernandez, who was first with a time of 19:57.30.

As a team, Granby totaled 34 points, edging Norview (37). Maury was third with 54.

On the boys’ side, Maury (36) topped Granby (44), Norview (62) and Churchland (77).

Granby’s Ryan Harris was the top individual with a time of 16:34.50.

Poquoson shuts out a familiar foe

The No. 6 Poquoson Islanders overcame a familiar foe as they shut out James Monroe in a rematch of a Class 3 field hockey state semifinal during the spring season.

Sydney Baggett, Skyler Brown and Allison Teubert scored for Poquoson in a 3-0 win over the Yellow Jackets from Fredericks­burg.

Poquoson lost two consecutiv­e state titles to the Yellow Jackets in 2018 and 2019. Then, during the 2021 postseason, the Islanders earned a come-from-behind win over James Monroe in a state semifinal before taking home the program’s first state crown days later.

Cox tops Kempsville

Cox’s Daniel Hurley registered 11 kills in Cox’s straight-set win over No. 9 Kempsville.

Logan Manning added five kills, Kyle Schlaepfer had four kills and 19 assists and Nate Harrington finished with four blocks for the No. 2 Falcons in the 25-11, 25-18, 25-16 win.

Kaya Dargusch scored the overtime game-winner in a big Beach District field hockey victory for Ocean Lakes, with the Dolphins defeating Salem 3-2.

Brenna McCarty and Devin McCall also scored for the Dolphins, who took an early lead before falling behind 2-1 midway through the game. McCarty netted the tying goal before earning an assist on Dargusch’s goal five minutes into overtime.

Tamia Lawton had a goal and an assist for the SunDevils and Mallory Haske also scored.

Grafton continues dominant stretch

Alexis Keeter filled the stat

sheet as No. 5 Grafton defeated No. 9 Tabb in three sets in girls volleyball.

Keeter finished with 19 kills, 14 digs and five blocks to lead the Clippers to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-15 win.

Alondra Miranda-Pagan added 33 assists and 11 digs, Naomi Smalls had nine kills and Deana Pigue finished with 24 digs.

Grafton has stormed to a 17-1 record in dominant fashion this season, having dropped just four sets total. The Clippers’ last loss came against No. 3 First Colonial at an invitation­al in September. Since that loss, the Clippers have won eight consecutiv­e matches in straight sets.

Field hockey: Monique Lipton and Carly Hoffer had a

hat trick apiece as Kempsville defeated Oscar Smith 8-0. Delaney Ogden added two goals and an assist.

Field hockey: Ninth-ranked Western Branch (11-2) rolled to a 9-0 nondistric­t victory over Woodside.

Boys soccer: Hampton Roads Academy’s Riley Usher had two goals and Jackson Underwood also scored in a 3-0 win over Catholic.

Field hockey: Malena Magnano netted a hat trick to lead No. 10 Kellam over Landstown in a 6-0 win.

Girls tennis: Cape Henry, which lost to Nansemond-Suffolk in the spring season, earned a 7-2 victory over the Saints, the No. 2 team in VISAA Division II, as Anna Kutelia and Mary Turner Shipp were among the Dolphins’ singles victors.
