Van Dyke drives Miami past No. 18 NC State

- Staff, wire reports

Tyler Van Dyke backed up his words, and Miami took a big step toward potentially salvaging its season.

Van Dyke passed for 325 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to Charleston Rambo, to lead the host Hurricanes past No. 18 N.C. State 31-30 Saturday night — snapping what was a six-game losing streak against Power Five conference opponents.

The freshman, who started this season backing up the now-injured D’Eriq King, said earlier in the week that he didn’t think N.C. State could stop Miami’s offense. And after completing 25 of 33 passes, he proved himself right.

Jaylan Knighton had 166 total yards — 83 rushing, 83 receiving — and a touchdown catch for Miami (3-4, 1-2). Rambo finished with nine catches for 127 yards.

Devin Leary threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns, plus ran for another for N.C. State. Thayer Thomas had both touchdown receptions for the Wolfpack (5-2, 2-1).

On third-and-16 with about 2:30 left and the Wolfpack out of timeouts, Van Dyke found Will Mallory over the middle for 21 yards to ensure the victory.

Louisville 28, Boston College 14: Malik Cunningham rushed for three touchdowns, including a 14-yard clinching run with 2:53

remaining to cap a milestone performance, as the host Cardinals overcame four turnovers to snap a two-game losing streak.

Seeking a rebound coming out of a bye following consecutive losses by four total points, the Cardinals (4-3, 2-2) followed a BC touchdown with 21 unanswered points to take control before halftime, or so it seemed. They thwarted chances to pad their lead as Cunningham tossed two interceptions and Hassan Hall fumbled in between their TDs.

Dennis Grosel completed 17 of 32 passes for 141 yards and a TD, but threw two interceptions in his first start as Boston College (4-3, 0-3), Virginia Tech’s next foe, dropped its third consecutive game.

Region and state

Randolph-Macon 49, Apprentice 7: The Yellow Jackets (7-1) breezed past the Builders (2-5) in Ashland as Justin DeLeon and Kwesi Clarke ran for two touchdowns apiece.

Keshaun Williams had Apprentice’s highlight, rushing for a 75-yard touchdown with 10:48 left in the third quarter. He had 121 yards on four carries.

Apprentice’s Grant Swanger and Mason Tatum split time, combining to complete 10 of 26 for 73 yards and two interceptions. Jaivon Walker led Apprentice’s defense with seven tackles, but the Builders have lost three games in a row. Houston 31, East Carolina 24, OT: Alton McCaskill ran 25-yards for a touchdown in overtime for the Cougars (6-1, 4-0 American Athletic Conference), and Houston’s defense forced a turnover by ECU (3-4, 1-2) in the extra session.

The game, which was originally set to begin at 3 p.m. Central, was delayed 20 minutes due to lightning. At 3:20 p.m., it was delayed after a brief start and didn’t resume until five hours later. It ended close to midnight in Houston.

It finally ended when the Cougars’ JoVanni Stewart recovered Ryan Jones’ fumble, which was initiated on a tackle by Donavan Mutin after Jones took a short pass from Holton Ahlers.

Down 24-10, Ahlers ran scored from the 1 with 6:59 left in regulation before the Cougars turned the ball over on their first play from scrimmage on the following drive. Ahlers then threw a 13-yard scoring pass to Audie Omotosho with 5:43 left to force overtime. Ahlers threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns.

Liberty 35, North Texas 26: Malik Willis threw three touchdown passes and Demario Douglas returned a punt 72 yards for the go-ahead score for Liberty, which scored the final 21 points in Denton, Texas.

Liberty (6-2) trailed 20-7 after Aaron Beckham’s 27-yard field goal for the Mean Green with 1:51 left in the first half. But backup quarterback Johnathan Bennett fired a 39-yard scoring strike to CJ Daniels to pull the Flames within six at intermission.

North Texas (1-6) stretched its lead to 26-14 on Austin Aune’s 6-yard TD toss to Jason Pirtle with 7:27 remaining in the third quarter, but the Flames dominated from there.

Elizabeth City State 32, Chowan 28: De’Abrie Smith threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Zion Riddick with 4:12 left, propelling the host Vikings (3-5, 3-2 CIAA) over the Hawks (5-3, 2-3).

Despite four touchdown passes by Bryce Witt, Chowan lost its third game in a row since gaining its first national ranking in Division II.

Virginia State 23, Lincoln 3: Darius Hagans, a junior from Chesapeake, and Chauncey Caldwell ran for touchdowns for the Trojans (3-4, 3-2 CIAA) on their homecoming day, and Nicholas Woolfolk kicked field goals of 32, 31 and 33 yards. The Lions, from Pennsylvania, fell to 1-7, 1-4.

Service academies

No. 22 San Diego State 20, Air Force 14: Matt Araiza kicked two field goals, Kaegun Williams and Chance Bell ran for touchdowns, and SDSU withstood the host Falcons’ comeback bid.

The Aztecs kept Air Force’s top-ranked running attack in check by frequently using a fourth linebacker instead of a defensive back.

San Diego State (7-0, 3-0 Mountain West) beat Air Force for a ninth straight time. Air Force (6-2, 3-2) had its four-game winning streak snapped.
