Kempsville reaches region semifinals

Delaney Ogden netted the game-winning goal midway through the third quarter to lead fourth-seeded Kempsville to a 1-0 win over fifth-seeded Hickory in a Class 5 Region A field hockey quarterfin­al Thursday at the Regional Training Center.

Ogden scored on a dish from Monique Lipton, who netted the game-winner in Kempsville’s 1-0 upset of Kellam in the Chiefs’ regular-season finale.

The Chiefs, who will face top-seeded Cox in Tuesday’s semifinals, posted their 10th shutout of the season and 11th win in the past 12 games.

York advances with 2OT win

Caeli Firth tallied the suddendeat­h game-winner to lead the No. 4 York Falcons to a 2-1 win over No. 5 Lafayette in double overtime in a Class 3 Region A quarterfin­al.

Gaby Youngpeter scored on an assist from Grace Katzer to put York on the scoreboard in the second quarter.

The Falcons will face top-seeded Tabb in the semifinal round. The undefeated, top-seeded Tigers registered their 17th win of the season with a 7-1 quarterfin­al victory over New Kent.

Fast start sparks Patriots

Landry Meyer finished with four goals to lead second-seeded First Colonial to a dominant 9-0 win over Salem in a Class 5 Region A quarterfin­al.

Finley Payne, who has 53 goals this season to lead the Patriots, added two goals and three assists, Dani Volpe had a pair of goals and Jolie Day also scored for the Patriots.

This is the first postseason win since 2019 for First Colonial (15-1).

The Patriots will face No. 3 Princess Anne in a semifinal Tuesday.

First Colonial defeated the Cavaliers 7-1 in a regular-season matchup.

Bailey, Cox romp

Zella Bailey has top-seeded Cox rolling as the Falcons took one step closer to a fourth consecutiv­e state championsh­ip and an undefeated season.

Led by Bailey’s six goals and two assists, Cox erupted for 11 first-half goals in a 13-0 win over No. 8 Tallwood in a Class 5 Region A quarterfin­al.

Bailey leads the 15-0 Falcons with 34 goals this season.

Emme Schwartz added a hat trick, Addie Froehlich and Joey Savino had a goal and an assist apiece, Megan Spear dished out three assists and Erma Bailey and Sophia Burch also scored as the Falcons surpassed double digits for the fourth straight game.

Freshman Raguini scores hat trick

Sydney Raguini, a freshman, recorded a hat trick for No. 3 Princess Anne in a 6-0 victory over No. 6 Bayside in a Class 5 Region A quarterfin­al.

Nielsen Baxley added a goal and an assist and Madi Allen and Erika Wu also scored for the Cavaliers (14-3) in Princess Anne’s 11th shutout of the season.

The Cavaliers face a formidable opponent in Tuesday’s semifinal in First Colonial, which has allowed just seven goals this season.

Grassfield blanks Ocean Lakes

Kyleigh Kearney finished with a goal and an assist and Isobel Evans also scored as Grassfield picked up a 2-0 win over Ocean Lakes in a Class 6 Region A quarterfin­al.

Peyton Hamilton finished with six saves for the shutout for the Grizzlies (11-3).
