Gloucester boys, Maury girls capture Class 5 Region B cross country crowns

Granby’s Ryan Harris won the Class 5 Region B boys cross country title Saturday in Williamsbu­rg.

He covered the 5-kilometer Eastern State Hospital course in 17 minutes, 28.42 seconds, to help the Comets finish second. Gloucester’s Tanner Baker was the runner-up as he led the Dukes to the team title.

Maury’s Cameron Sadr was third to lead the Commodores to a third-place finish and help them advance to the state meet for the first time since 1994.

In the Class 5 Region B girls meet, also on the Eastern State course, Maury took the team championsh­ip.

The Commodores’ Lily Guinn won the individual title in 19 minutes, 38.09 seconds, and teammates Hallie McMurdie and Mary

Ella Wynne finished third and fifth, respective­ly.

Menchville finished second and Gloucester was third. Norview’s Cassidy Fernandez was the individual runner-up.

Girls tennis

Norfolk Academy took first place in a highly competitiv­e Tidewater Conference of Independen­t Schools championsh­ip tournament Thursday and Saturday at Huntington Park in Newport News.

The Bulldogs won three of the six singles brackets and took the team title despite reaching only one of the three doubles finals.

Based on 10 points for a flight championsh­ip, nine for a runner-up finish and so on down to one point for 10th place, Norfolk Academy totaled 79 points, one more than regular-season champion Norfolk Collegiate. Cape Henry Collegiate was third with 71, and Nansemond-Suffolk was fourth with 70.

Norfolk Academy’s singles titles came from No. 3 Andersen Legum, No. 4 Nora Clingenpee­l and No. 6 AC Perry.

Legum edged the Oaks’ Cat Sarris 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10) in a bracket championsh­ip match that played a pivotal role in the team race.

Norfolk Collegiate left-hander Julianna Selig defeated Walsingham’s Jordan Thomas 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 for the flight 1 title. No. 2 Alice Coxe also won her flight for the Oaks, while No. 5 Katie Tserediani took Cape Henry’s only singles title.

In doubles, Norfolk Collegiate won the top two flights with the tandems of Selig-Cat Sarris and Coxe-Solana Wesley, and Tserediani joined Berkley Compton to win the third bracket.

Several TCIS teams will be in the VISAA state dual tournament, which will begin Nov. 9.

Cheer

Great Bridge won the Class 4 Region A championsh­ip Saturday and joined meet host Grafton in qualifying for VHSL state competitio­n.

The Wildcats performed a routine that netted a 249 score in the finals, followed by the Clippers (243.5) and Deep Creek (230). The top two teams per region will head to VCU’s Siegel Center for the state meet Saturday.

In the preliminar­y round, Great Bridge (256), Grafton (237.5) and Deep Creek (237) advanced, while Jamestown (238), Warhill (225) and Churchland (179) were eliminated.
