Notre Dame repels Howell, UNC in offensive showcase
Kyren Williams raced 91 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter Saturday night as No. 11 Notre Dame held off held off Sam Howell and upsetminded North Carolina 44-34 in a game that had over 1,000 yards in offense in South Bend, Indiana.
Williams ran for a career-high 199 yards on 22 carries to help the Irish improve to 7-1 with their third straight victory — and ruin the 400th collegiate game for Hall of Fame coach Mack Brown. His Tar Heels fell to 4-4.
Howell, who became the Tar Heels’ first quarterback with more than 10,000 passing yards in his junior season, finished with 341 yards on 24-of-31 accuracy, with one touchdown and one interception. He added another 101 yards on 18 carries, including a 31-yard touchdown.
No. 13 Wake Forest 45, Duke 7:
Sam Hartman continued his recent tear by accounting for five touchdowns, keeping the Demon Deacons in the mix for the ACC championship and the College Football Playoff. Hartman threw for 402 yards and three touchdowns, including a 38-yarder to Jaquarii Roberson on the first possession. He also ran for 61 yards and two scores for the Demon Deacons (8-0, 5-0 ACC). Mataeo Durant ran for 103 yards to lead the Blue Devils (3-5, 0-4).
Syracuse 21, Boston College 6:
Sean Tucker, the nation’s leading rusher, broke up the middle for a 51-yard score midway through the third quarter, leading the host Orange (5-4, 2-3 ACC) over longtime rival Boston College (4-4, 0-4). The Orange’s second straight victory left them on the
cusp of bowl eligibility.
N.C. State 28, Louisville 13: Devin Leary threw three of his four touchdown passes in the fourth quarter as North Carolina State (6-2, 3-1 ACC) finally got untracked on offense against the Cardinals (4-4, 2-3). Leary hit Trent Pennix on a 29-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the fourth quarter to push the Wolfpack into the lead. Leary connected with Devin Carter with 5:53 remaining as N.C. State stretched its edge to 21-13.
