Newport News police captain has new job as chief in North Carolina
Jason T. Bollhorst spent 26 years of his law enforcement career in Newport News before he received an offer he couldn’t turn down.
Bollhorst recently started a new role as police chief of the department in Albemarle, North Carolina. The Newport News Police Department hosted a ceremony last week to thank the former captain for his service to the city.
Bollhorst has lived in Newport News since 1974. He graduated from Denbigh High School before attending Christopher Newport College, now Christopher Newport University. He joined the Newport News Police Department in July 1995.
He served in supervisory positions for 10 years, including time in patrol and tactical operations. He spent two years as the commander of the South Precinct in the patrol division, and a year with the special investigations division.
Bollhorst says he’s passionate about law enforcement, community interaction and employee wellness, according to a news release from the city of Albemarle.
Albemarle City Manager Michael Ferris said it was a competitive search with several strong candidates from across the country.
“It became clear that Chief Bollhorst has the right level of experience but also a personality and personal skills and a desire to be here and to serve this community,” Ferris told the Stanly News & Press.
“We are also fortunate that Chief Bollhorst has selected Albemarle,” Ferris said in the news release, adding that Bollhorst had shown a commitment to serving the public and supporting “high-quality, professional law enforcement.”
Bollhorst is the latest in a string of Newport News officers who have gone on to serve as police chiefs in other cities this year.
In December, former assistant chief Michael Hudgins started as chief of the Pineville, North Carolina, police department. Then in the spring, former assistant police chief Eric Randall took a job leading the Pensacola Police Department in Florida.
