Vernon Belor

-

On November 9, 2021, Lt.Col. Vernon Belor of Hampton, a former Air Force Glider pilot and WW2 Veteran, flew home on angel wings to God’s angel army. The Colonel, who was born in Austin, Texas and grew up in various towns in southern Texas, had a heart the size of Texas and then some. He was a kind soul, liked by everyone and loved by the ones who knew him best, especially the love of his life, Jessie Belor, his wife of 81 years. He said of Jessie that her love, sacrifices, selfless devotion and care strengthened him during his military days in the service and helped him establish a military career. “She was a very good wife and life partner and I will love her forever”.

The Colonel was also a very selfless person, finding joy in church, charity and in taking care of people, which he did for the majority of his life. He joined the Civilian Conservation Core at 16 years of age to help support his family which consisted of two younger sisters, Earline and Hazel, a brother, Clifford, as well as his parents, Nora and Clifford Sr. After aging out of the C.C.C., he joined The United States Army Air Corps at 18 years old, where he became a Glider pilot. He met Jessie three years later on a two week temporary assignment in Glendale, California at the Pepper Tree Inn. They married a month later and while in the Air Force and touring the world, they raised 3 sons. Eventually, they went back to the states and after the Colonel’s retirement, he and Jessie raised a son and a daughter. Jessie and Vernon Belor spent more than 81 years together, side by side, living out the life they shared while growing old together in the same home built for them 60 years ago, one day at a time.

The Colonel is preceded in death by his son Michael Boyd. He is survived by his wife Jessie and sons, Harry Vernon Belor of the home, Danny and Debbie Belor of Kentucky, John Michael Belor of Hampton and daughter Michelle Belor of Hampton. He held in his heart several grandchildren, Tonya Belor, Randy Belor, Daniel Belor and wife Wendy, Danielle Belor and Phillip Furr Jr., as well as several great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home 2551 N. Armistead Ave Hampton, VA 23666. In lieu of flowers, the Colonel asked that donations be made to The Greater Discipleship Center, 1307 LaSalle Ave,Hampton, VA. 23669.
