James L. Parkinson
James (Jim) Lawrence Parkinson, 72, passed away peacefully in Yorktown, Virginia, on October 17, 2021 following a 5-month bout with cancer. Jim was born in 1949 in Monongahela, Pennsylvania.
At 17 1/2, Jim enlisted in the US Air Force and served 4 years as a jet engine mechanic, including one year serving in Vietnam.
He then spent 10+ years working at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In 1985 he transitioned to the east coast as one of the first mechanical technicians hired at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), in Newport News, Virginia where he worked for 25 years. Outside of work, Jim devoted significant time to supporting his local church community and participated in more than a dozen mission trips to Russia and Belize.
His most enjoyable hobbies were fishing, hiking, hunting, bicycling, camping, traveling, and anything else outdoors. Jim was an avid fly fisherman and shared his skills with Project Healing Waters, a veteran's organization dedicated to helping disabled veterans though fly fishing. Even with all these hobbies, Jim was always quick to
lend a helping hand to those around him, friend or stranger, it didn't matter.
Jim is survived by his brother Bill, son Ken, daughter-in-law Kate, and grandson Colin and predeceased by his brother Richard, and daughter Rebecca.
