Greenbrier Christian takes its first state 8-man football title

Greenbrier Christian Academy won its first state eight-man football championsh­ip Saturday, beating Virginia Episcopal School of Lynchburg 34-22.

The victory in the Virginia Independen­t Schools Football League Division 1 playoffs came behind a pair of impressive rushing performanc­es by the Gators (8-3).

Mike Nwogburu carried 24 times for 190 yards, and quarterbac­k Cade Cox had 179 yards on 27 rushes. Josh Long made a game-sealing intercepti­on, caused a fumble and made seven tackles.

VES, which beat Greenbrier 26-10 on Oct. 23, finished 7-2.

A first-round game, scoring 21 first-half points and moving into a region semifinal at Darling Stadium against Warhill (10-1). North Cross 55, Nansemond-Suffolk 14: The Raiders from Roanoke overwhelme­d the visiting Saints to reach the VISAA Division II championsh­ip game. North Cross will travel to the Virginia Beach Sportsplex to play Atlantic Shores for the championsh­ip at 7 p.m. Friday.

Field hockey

Fredericks­burg Academy 3, Cape Henry 2, 2 OTs: The Dolphins lost 3-0 in a shootout in the VISAA Division II final after the teams were deadlocked at 2.

Boys volleyball

Cox 3, Granby 0: The Falcons reached the Class 6 state semis with a 25-13, 25-7, 25-19 triumph.

Daniel Hurley had 13 kills, Kyle Schlaepfer added 21 assists and John Broccolett­i had 17 digs. Hickory 3, Maury 0: The Hawks earned the right to oppose Cox by winning 25-17, 25-8, 25-15. Kody Rogan had 28 assists, four aces and five digs while Alan Trinkala and Cooper Newell combined for 15 kills and five blocks.

Class 4: Richmond-area teams beat Hampton Roads opponents in all four quarterfin­al matchups Saturday. Warwick, the Eastern Section champion, came the closest, falling in five sets to Colonial Heights. The other three matches were 3-0 sweeps: Maggie Walker over Heritage, Patrick Henry of Ashland against Denbigh and Atlee over Great Bridge.

Nansemond-Suffolk 3, Peninsula Catholic 2: The second-seeded

Saints outlasted the top-seeded Knights 18-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 15-12 in Richmond for the VISAA Division II championsh­ip. Marlin Price and Kyra Bradford had 12 kills each for the Saints. Gracie Provost led NSA’s defense with 16 digs, and Haley Price and Tracy Wong had 25 assists each. Timberlake Christian 3, StoneBridg­e 0: The Cavaliers, from Chesapeake, finished 24-3 with a 25-11, 25-23, 29-27 loss in the VISAA Division III final.

Cox 3, Granby 0: Sophie Whitsel had five blocks in a 25-8, 25-7, 25-15 home victory in a Class 5 state quarterfin­al.

First Colonial 3, Maury 0: Libero Kayla Foley had 14 digs and four aces for the Patriots (22-4) in the 25-13, 25-7, 25-14 decision. First Colonial next will play Cox in a state semifinal Tuesday.

Freedom 3, Kellam 2: The South

Riding squad overcame a two-set deficit in a Class 6 quarterfin­al in Virginia Beach.

Grafton 3, Atlee 0: The host Clippers cruised into a Class 4 semifinal against Warhill.

Warhill 3, Chancellor 1: The Lions won the last four points for a 25-17, 25-27, 25-14, 26-24 Class 4 semifinal victory in Fredericks­burg. Dylan Norris, 6-foot-2, had 16 kills. Tabb 3, Warren County 0: The host Tigers had no trouble with their visitors from Front Royal, winning 25-11, 25-16, 25-13 in Class 3.

York 3, Goochland 2: The Falcons won the final two sets to beat the host Bulldogs and will visit archrival Tabb at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for a Class 3 semifinal.

East Rockingham 3, Poquoson 0: The Islanders fell in a Class 2 quarterfin­al 25-8, 25-18, 30-28. Madison Dykstra had 11 digs, nine kills and ace for Poquoson.
