Parental involvement

-

Re “Get involved” (Your Views, Oct. 29): No one has suggested that parents not be involved in their children’s education. What has been argued is that threats and vulgarity are not appropriate at school board meetings. Additionally, baseless conspiracy theories and mythology should not be a part of the discussion. The letter writer seems to believe a vast conspiracy to destroy the nation is being plotted and run by a liberal cabal. He mentions the Black Lives Matter marches as his evidence, neglecting the more serious Unite the Right march in Charlottesville or the more dangerous Jan. 6 riot in Washington.

Parents have always, and continue, to have the opportunity to be involved in their children’s education. All public schools hold open houses with the teachers who are available to speak with the parents. At the beginning of the school year open houses include a briefing by the teacher on what and how the children will be taught. Furthermore, the textbooks have been, and continue to be available for parental review at the local school administrative buildings. Finally, parents can simply ask their children to see their textbook, tests, essay assignments and projects, and what was discussed in class that day. No conspiracy here.

What is going on is that we white people are no longer the majority, and we are being forced to rethink the story of the United States and how that history manifests itself today and many of us don’t like the narrative and the truth.
