No. 20 Captains take down Lebanon Valley; NSU tumbles

Hannah Orloff scored 15 points and Alivia Giles added 14, both off the bench, to lead Christophe­r Newport to a 94-31 rout of Lebanon Valley on Friday at the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Classic in Ashland.

Katy Rader contribute­d 12 points for the Captains (5-0), who are ranked 20th in Division III, while Natalie Terwillige­r had 10.

CNU controlled the game from the outset, outscoring Lebanon Valley 27-6 in the first quarter.

CNU will face the winner of Friday night’s game between Randolph-Macon and Averett at 1 or 3 p.m. today.

College of Charleston 66, Norfolk State 62: The Spartans (2-2) led much of the way at Echols Hall, but lost to the Cougars (2-0).

Grace Abercrombi­e led Charleston with 25 points, hitting 5 of 11 3-point tries and 7 of 17 field-goal attempts overall. Peyton Martin had 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Camille Downs had 15 points for NSU, which sank 11 of 13 free throws. Deja Francis had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Tatiana Jones had 10 points and four steals.

NSU led by as many as 11 points and by 28-22 at halftime, but Charleston outscored the Spartans 26-15 in the third quarter. Downs sank a 3-pointer for a 56-54 NSU lead with 4:53 to go, but Charleston went on a 9-0 surge to pull ahead for good.

With NSU down 64-62, a turnover with 4 seconds remaining foiled the Spartans’ last chance. Arynn Eady sank two free throws with 3 seconds left.

No. 22 West Virginia 78, Kennesaw State 58: Jasmine Carson came off the bench to score 14 points and hit four 3-pointers, both career highs, and Esmery Martinez posted her 16th career double-double for the host Mountainee­rs (2-0). Martinez scored 13 points with 12 rebounds for the winners.
