It’s praiseworthy

Re “House OKs $2T social, climate bill” (Nov. 20): Record heat waves, wildfires, drought, extreme storms, and flooding this past summer have made one thing undeniably clear — the climate crisis is here and getting worse. Hampton Roads feels the effects of the climate crisis on a daily basis, and we need representatives who recognize that.

Rep. Elaine Luria recently voted to pass the Build Back Better act, which includes unprecedented investments to address the climate crisis, cut carbon pollution, deliver action on environmental justice, reduce energy bills for working families throughout Virginia, and create millions of quality jobs. The bill, which includes more than $550 billion for climate action, is the most significant climate investment in our nation’s history. Once signed into law, it will put our country on a path to dramatically cut the pollution driving climate change, while building a just and equitable economy.

Luria’s support for the Build Back Better act and its bold investments in climate, justice, jobs, and clean energy is just what we need to get our economy back on track, protect our health, and tackle the climate crisis. The investments included in the act will set the United States on a path to a 50-52% reduction in carbon pollution by 2030. That’s the same goal scientists say is necessary to prevent the worst impacts of climate change.

We are facing a moment of truth, and Luria should be commended for supporting the Build Back Better act.
