Queen continues reign

‘Butterbean’ wins another Late Model race at Langley

- Staff reports

Drivers around Langley Speedway could be excused for wondering when — or if — anybody can slow down Brenden “Butterbean” Queen of Chesapeake.

The track’s two-time reigning Late Model points champ earned a 100-lap victory in less than 43 minutes on a pleasant Saturday night in Hampton. It was his fifth victory in six Langley Late Model races this year, and it came a night after he won on Dixieland Speedway’s dirt track in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

Danny Edwards was the runner-up, 1.422 seconds behind, and his brother Greg was third, 2.050 behind.

Ten of the 13 drivers completed all 100 laps.

In other Langley races Saturday:

Grand Stock: Nick Sample won a 30-lap race, while Chris Roberts edged Garrett Byrd for second place in a field of seven.

The top two gained on points leader Tim Wilson, who took fifth.

Legends: Colby Flowers beat runner-up Spencer Saunders by 853-thousandths of a second in a 25-lap race that took less than 17 minutes. It was Flowers’ second triumph of the year.

Jamie Price took third and

Charlie Beals fourth in the field of 15.

Saunders and Price began the evening one point behind Beals for the season lead.

Super Truck: Chris Roberts cruised to a 25-lap victory, outrunning second-place Hunter Waltrip by 3.034 seconds for his third Super Truck victory of the year. It came on the same night as Roberts’ second-place Grand Stock showing.

Donald Brown was a distant third among eight Super Truck drivers, 10.103 seconds behind. Chris McEvoy, who began the night two points ahead of Waltrip for the season lead, came in fourth.

Virginia Racers: Cody Bryant and Doug Warren won 35-lap races with nine drivers apiece. Ryley Music was the runner-up in both.

Bryant won the opener by 1.087 seconds over Music. Andrew Condrey took third, 5.354 off the lead.

Warren cruised to a 2.746second victory in the nightcap, while Bryant was third.

Bandolero: Brian Rundstrom edged Ayden Millette by 290-thousandths of a second on the 15th and final lap, becoming the first Bandolero driver with two victories this season. Those two are in a close duel for the points title, well ahead of everybody else.

Atley Wiese was third, 1.806 seconds off the lead, among 12 drivers.

Virginia Motor Speedway

Austin Hubbard of Bridgeville, Delaware, earned a Virginia Motor Speedway victory for the first time since 2008.

Hubbard scored a Pro Late Model triumph Saturday night on the dirt track in Middlesex County, leading wire-to-wire from the outside pole and taking over the points lead.

Eventual runner-up Matthew Hildebrand pulled virtually even with five laps to go in the 30-lap race, but Hubbard — the 2006 champion at VMS — fended him off. Ray Love Jr., Jeremy Pilkerton and Chuck Bowie completed the top five.

Sportsman: Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg worked his way up from the eighth starting position, passing Steve Causey of Smithfield on the fourth lap and going to his third consecutive victory.

Causey, Matt Meads, Billy Adkins and James Givens placed second through fifth, respectively, over 25 laps.

Modified: Rick Hulson of Glen Burnie, Maryland, scored a victory after coming up from a seventh-place start. He took the lead on lap 13 of 25 and retained it, followed by top qualifier Chase Butler, Brent Bordeaux of Fredericksburg, Joey Polevoy and Jeff Solinger in the top five.

Limited Stock Car: Johnny Brooks of Aylett scored a notable first victory of the year. He had been in a hospital emergency room about 12 hours earlier because of something in his eye and kidney stones.

Brian Maxey was the runner-up in the 20-lap race, followed by Raymond Harper, Cory Bradley and Ryan Hutchens.

The track in Jamaica next will race July 9 with all four VMS weekly divisions competing.
