AROUND THE HORN

■ Angels, Mariners: A lengthy bench-clearing brawl resulted in the ejections of six players and both managers in the second inning of the Angels’ 2-1 victory over the Mariners on Sunday in Anaheim, California. Three of the first four hitters in the Mariners’ lineup were ejected, while three Angels pitchers were tossed after two days of tension over inside pitches boiled over with punches thrown by people from both teams. The melee began when the Mariners’ Jesse Winker charged the Angels’ emptying dugout after Winker was hit by the first pitch of the inning from Angels opener Andrew Wantz. After the field cleared, Angels closer Raisel Iglesias returned a few moments later to throw large containers of sunflower seeds and gum onto the infield while screaming at the umpires. Luis Rengifo homered and David MacKinnon drove in the tiebreaking run with a single in the seventh for the Angels, who avoided a series sweep. Marco Gonzales (4-8) pitched fivehit ball into the seventh inning of a hard-luck loss for the left-hander and the Mariners, who finished 5-1 on an impressive road trip — although the finale was overshadowed by a major brawl. Wantz had also thrown a pitch behind the head of the Mariners’ No. 2 hitter, Julio Rodriguez, in the first inning. That pitch certainly appeared to be a response to Erik Swanson’s 95 mph fastball near Mike Trout’s head in the ninth inning Saturday night, a throw that infuriated the three-time AL MVP. The umpires issued warnings to both dugouts after Wantz’s pitch to Rodriguez, but Winker and the Angels set it off an inning later, with both benches and bullpens emptying. The brawl lasted about four minutes, with people from both teams appearing to throw multiple punches. Injured Angels star

Anthony Rendon threw an open left hand to Winker’s face during the scuffle, which is notable because his right hand is in a cast. The Halos’ $245 million third baseman is already out for the year for the second straight season. When Winker finally left the field, he made obscene gestures with both hands at the jeering Angels fans behind the Mariners’ dugout. Angels interim manager Phil Nevin and the Mariners’ Scott Servais were ejected. The Angels lost Wantz, Iglesias and reliever Ryan Tepera, while Winker, Rodriguez and J.P. Crawford were tossed for the Mariners.

■ Braves: Ronald Acuña Jr. wasn’t in the starting lineup against the visiting Dodgers after fouling a ball off his left foot the previous night. Acuña moved around the Braves clubhouse Sunday afternoon with his left knee on a medical scooter to keep his foot elevated. Tests showed no fracture, but the star outfielder said he couldn’t put pressure on his foot.

■ Red Sox: Trevor Story drove in two runs to reach 500 career RBIs, Rafael Devers and J.D. Martinez each had three hits and the Red Sox beat the host Guardians 8-3 for a threegame sweep that extended their winning streak to seven. The Red Sox had 15 hits and drew 11 walks, their highest total since May 2019. They’ve won 11 of 13.

■ Yankees: Aaron Judge drove a three-run HR in the 10th for his second walkoff hit against the Astros in four days, and the host Yankees recovered after nearly being no-hit for the second consecutive game to win 6-3 and salvage a four-game split in the series between the AL’s top teams. Giancarlo Stanton ended a historic hitless drought for the Yankees with a one-out HR in the seventh, and DJ LeMahieu followed with a tying two-run drive in the eighth.
