Reynolds’ three homers, six RBIs help Pirates deny Nats of sweep

-

Bryan Reynolds hit a career- high three homers and drove in six runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Washington Nationals 8-7 on Wednesday in Washington.

“I think Bryan Reynolds carried us to a win tonight,” said Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton said, whose Pirates ended a fivegame losing streak. “We kind of jumped on his shoulders.”

Reynolds had a two-run homer in the first inning off starter Paolo Espino and a solo drive in the sixth off Carl Edwards Jr. (2-2). Edwards exited with two runners on base in the seventh, giving way to Kyle Finnegan.

After Ke’Bryan Hayes struck out, Reynolds launched Finnegan’s elevated sinker into the visitors’ bullpen in left-center for a three-run homer that put the Pirates up 8-6. It was Pittsburgh’s only hit in 18 at-bats with runners in scoring position during the series.

The Pirates denied Washington its first three-game home sweep of

Pittsburgh since June 14-16, 2021. Yadiel Hernandez homered for the Nationals, who stranded 10 runners and had won three in a row and six of eight.

Mariners 9, Orioles 3: Julio Rodríguez hit his 12th home run of the season as part of Seattle’s six-run fourth inning, and the host Mariners beat Baltimore for their seventh win in nine games.

The Mariners took two of three from Baltimore and continued a stretch of good baseball after a 5-1 road trip last week.

Rodríguez’s long ball was the highlight on a day there was finally plenty of offense for Seattle starter Chris Flexen. Rodríguez’s two-run shot was estimated at 431 feet and landed in the first row of the second deck at T-Mobile Park in left-center field.

Flexen (4-8) had received zero or one run of support while on the mound in nine of his first 14 starts this season, so getting nine runs was a welcomed change.

Baltimore starter Austin Voth (0-1) lasted just three innings pitching against his hometown team for the first time in his career. Voth allowed four hits, but only one earned run in his third start with the Orioles this season.

Reliever Nick Vespi was roughed up for six runs on six hits and recorded just one out.

Late Tuesday

Mariners 2, Orioles 0: Jesse Winker drove in two runs with a go-ahead double in the eighth, Robbie Ray allowed just one hit over seven innings and Seattle beat Baltimore.

Winker’s go-ahead hit came with two outs against Felix Bautista and hit the right-center field wall, driving in J.P. Crawford and Julio Rodriguez for the two-run lead.

The Orioles’ only hit in the game came with one out in the fourth when Ryan Mountcastle lined a single into center field off Seattle starter Robbie Ray.

Nationals 3, Pirates 1: Patrick Corbin matched a career high with 12 strikeouts, Yadiel Hernandez delivered a go-ahead two-run double and Washington rallied in the eighth inning for the second straight game.

Corbin (4-10) allowed one run in eight innings for Washington.

The Nationals sputtered with runners in scoring position much of the game, going hitless in their first eight attempts before Hernandez pinch hit against former Washington prospect Wil Crowe (3-5) with two on and two outs in the eighth. Hernandez hit a shot over Diego Castillo in right, scoring both runners.
